New Kosher Products
The Orthodox Union is now certifying Wonder Bread products in certain (but not all) regions of the USA. Wonder Bread products that are certified by the Orthodox Union bear the OU symbol. Wonder Bread products that do not bear the OU symbol are not certified by the Orthodox Union.

Kashrut Alerts
Starbuck's Toasted Marshmallow Hot Cocoa (10 oz tin distributed by Conifer Specialties) mistakenly bears the Kof-K symbol. This is a non-kosher item. Corrective action is being taken.
Mott's Apple White Grape Juice sold by Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, was mistakenly labeled with the OK Kosher symbol. THIS PRODUCT NOT CERTIFIED BY OK KOSHER. Corrective measures are being taken.Some Trader Joe's Oriental Rice Crackers are labeled with an unauthorized OU and an unauthorized BCK. This product is not certified by the Orthodox Union nor by the BCK. Corrective measure have been implemented. This only affects those that are Product of Thailand; the rice crackers produced in Vietnam will be BCK certified. Some packages of Blue Diamond Lime and Chili Almonds (in 1 lb bags, produced by Blue Diamond Growers, Sacramento, CA) were mistakenly labeled with a plain OK kosher symbol instead of the OK-D. This product is dairy. The dairy ingredients are listed on the label. The product was withdrawn from the market.
Some of the following 'The Bakery' Pies sold at Wal-Mart stores have been labeled with the Scroll-K, erroneously omitting the dairy designation: Banana Cream Pie, Coconut Cream Pie, Pumpkin Pie, and Sweet Pie.
Superior Cake Products Black & White Cookies sold at Costco stores have an OU-Pareve on the front, but list dairy ingredients on the back. The product is dairy.
HERSHEY'S SYRUPS: all Hershey's Chocolate, Strawberry, Caramel and Sundae Syrups, that bear an OU-D, contain actual dairy.
Wasabi Powder manufactured by ZF Sushi bears an unauthorized Star-K.

Laykie's Gourmet finds a new home at the ERJCC & Cafe at the J
The Cafe at the J, located inside the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center, will be under new management and be reopening in the coming weeks with many exciting changes in store. Laykie's Gourmet Cafe at the J will soon offer grab and go items including salads, sandwiches, yogurt parfaits, muffins, fruit and snacks. Gourmet sandwiches will be made fresh daily with whole wheat and white bread options. Specialty items will also be available such as Caesar Salad, Goat Cheese Arugula Salad and even a Quinoa Avocado salad will also make its debut. Coming soon will be meat and chicken daily offerings that will come out of the meat kitchen, sealed and ready to go. Boy Scouts Kosher BBQ Chickens
Boy Scout Troop 806 is once again selling Kosher BBQ Chickens, under the supervision of HKA. Cost is $13 per chicken. All proceeds provide scholarships to needy scouts and help defray the cost of operating the Troop. Tickets are being sold by members of the Troop, for pick up on November 24, 2013. If you are not able to pick up a chicken on the 24th, please consider purchasing a ticket so that we can donate your chicken to Jewish Family Service to help feed indigent families. The HKA is looking for Mashgichim
As Houston's kosher landscape continues to grow, the Houston Kashruth Association is looking to fill both full, and part time Kosher Supervisor (Mashgiach) positions across Houston.
Training is provided and hours are flexible.
Candidates must be 17 years of age or older and adhere to the laws of Shabbat and Kosher.

Aroma Pizza Cafe closes its doors
After three years of serving the Houston Kosher Community, Aroma Pizza Caf� has sadly closed its doors. This dairy restaurant situated on the corner of Hillcroft and Bissonnet served many delicious dishes, including paninis, soups and salads, that will be missed.

It's that time a year again: Like their brethren across the nation, Jewish Houstonians will make their way to their local supermarkets for last-minute kosher wine shopping.
And like most Jewish Americans, they will find themselves ill-prepared in selecting the wines, partly because for most of them, it's on the only time of the year that they feel compelled to serve fine wine.

More People Choosing Kosher for Health

An ancient diet has become one of the hottest new food trends.
A growing number of supermarket shoppers are going kosher - not for religious reasons, but because they are convinced the foods are safer and better for health.
Kosher foods, which must meet a number of dietary and processing rules to comply with traditional Jewish law, are the fastest growing ethnic cuisine, reports the market research firm Mintel. Sales of kosher foods reached $12.5 billion in 2008, an increase of 64 percent since 2003.
Reflecting the growing interest, Manischewitz, a major kosher food company, held a kosher cook off last month in Manhattan. It featured five chefs from around the country who prepared dishes with the most traditional of kosher-recipe ingredients: chicken broth.
Four of the chefs do not keep kosher but look for certain kosher products in the supermarket. One of those is Julie DeMatteo, a 68-year-old grandmother from Clementon, N.J., who is not Jewish but regularly shops for kosher foods. She believes they are more closely monitored during their processing and "more consistent in taste," she said. Continue Reading
