National Heritage Area Funding Authorization Extended
We are pleased to report that the continuing resolution bills passed by both houses of Congress included funding authorization extension for our National Heritage Area program to September 30, 2013. We hope to hear more as this progresses, and although this is positive news, much more work still needs to be done. Many thanks to Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for supporting us throughout the Senate debate on the bill and our house delegation for following through with their support as well.

I Love My Park Day Join Parks & Trails New York, the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP), local Friends groups and Governor Cuomo in celebrating New York's magnificent state parks and historic sites. "I Love My Park Day" takes place on May 4th, and is a statewide volunteer effort to help clean up and beautify our state's parks and historical sites. At last year's event, thousands of New Yorkers pitched in to paint, plant, clean, build, and make repairs across the state. Many state parks were damaged by Superstorm Sandy, so this is the perfect time to help get them ready for the summer season. Sign up here to lend a hand!

Partners for Albany Stories: Assessment of Heritage/Cultural Resources in Planning Projects
|
Albany Institute of History and Art
|
In 2011, the Greenway awarded a $9,000 matching grant to the City of Albany to assist in the development and implementation of a citywide interpretive plan. The City worked with Partners for Albany Stories (PAS), a collaboration among twelve historical organizations that is working toward this goal of an interpretive plan. With these funds, the group was able to hire consultants to help them reach their goal: an historian to survey and summarize the community's outlook and values regarding historic resources and a consultant to facilitate the strategic planning and project development meetings.
Through surveying the public and compiling the existing resources, the City will be able to use the information to develop a targeted plan for interpreting their historic resources. Development of an interpretive plan will help promote awareness among residents and visitors about Albany's heritage, and result in greater participation and visitation. Having a coordinated story to tell will help improve the visitor experience at cultural and historic sites throughout the city. The Greenway is pleased to be able to fund important projects such as this one, that further the goal of protecting and promoting our natural and cultural resources.

Green Tip Of The Month |
Refrigerators and freezers account for about a sixth of all electricity use in a typical American home, and they use more electricity than any other single household appliance. Keeping your refrigerator full, but not to the point of overstuffing, will allow it to run at max capacity.
