Cover to Cover Author Series - FEBRUARY

Our February Author Series will feature Sarah Chayes, Senior Associate in the Democracy and Rule of Law Program and the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment, on her forthcoming book, Thieves of State: Why Corruption Threatens Global Security. In a riveting account that weaves history with fast-moving reportage and insider accounts from the Afghanistan war, award-winning former NPR correspondent and e Sarah Chayes (full bioidentifies the unexpected link: corruption. Book details

"Thieves of State is a revolutionary book."
-Anne-Marie Slaughter, President of the New America Foundation

"Sarah Chayes brilliantly illuminates a topic no one wants talk about-but we must. Corruption is an insidious force that is causing some of the most dangerous challenges our world is facing. It has to be at the core of America's strategies, engagements and relationships for the twenty-first century."

Global Perspectives Workshop for Educators: MINT Countries Webcast - Jan. 24
Until the turn of the century, there was very little focus on non-Western economies. But when economist Jim O'Neill coined the now widely accepted term BRIC, attention shifted to emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China. Thirteen years later, O'Neill claims the MINT countries (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey) should be on our radar. Join the World Affairs Council of Houston to learn how to bring MINT into your classroom, including three presentations by Dr. Martin Lewis:
  • "Challenges to a Nation - Building in the Archipelagic Environment of Indonesia" - Why MINT is important
  • "The Rise of Boko Haram and other Threats to Nigeria's National Integrity" - Key terms, definitions and historical context
  • "Regional, Religious and Linguistic Divisions in the Turkish Nation-State"
Teachers will walk away with ready-to-use lesson plans, resources and ideas for classroom activities!

Saturday, January 24, 2015
Registration: 9:00 AM ET
Program: 9:30 AM ET - 2:00 PM ET
