Greetings from Midland!
Recently I asked new ninth grader Anneliese Silveyra '17 to describe her first few weeks at Midland. Without hesitation, she said, "Exhilarating and exhausting!" She is right; we all came out of the blocks at a fast pace. It takes time and energy to learn new names, begin new classes and master new jobs. Life at Midland demands that teachers and students "show up" each day. Whether we are in the dish house or a classroom, all the daily tasks and high expectations provide opportunities for teaching and learning.
Four year senior and ninth grade Prefect, David Salehpour '14 delivered a chapel message last Sunday that hit the mark. David said that when he started to run as a ninth grader, he learned to overcome setbacks and move through thresholds of difficulty and physical discomfort. In time he did become the marathon runner he wanted to be. He advised that a mile of walking or running may be all a person can handle at first. Slowly he learned that he could do a little more. If we can just breathe and exhale, he said, we can learn to let go of the thoughts, emotions and sensations of doubt that can hold each of us back. David's ninth grade prefect showed him the way, and David offered to share his passion for running with anyone willing to try; thank you David.
As we find our pace, I trust the energy and enthusiasm for the school year will remain high. Each year, Midland calls on each of us to build endurance, meet new challenges, and to learn from our experience.
On October 5-6th, we check-in and welcome our current parents to the 9th Annual Round-Up Weekend. You are all welcome to stop by the school anytime you are in the area.
Sincerely,
Will Graham
Head of School

Midland Alumnus:
Judge Peter Smith '51
After graduating from Midland and UC Berkeley, Judge Smith gained experience in the US Army from 1955 to 1957. He then attended Loyola Law School. Smith practiced as a lawyer, became an Alhambra Municipal Court Judge, and then a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge. Smith recently published his second book, Undeterred, which chronicals his life, including his years at Midland.
Smith and his son Bruce visited campus on September 16, and spoke with students over lunch. Judge Smith has remained active with Midland and has generously supported the school for many years, with gifts for annual Scholarships, Chapel renovations, and the Kimpton-Schuyler Endowment. In 2003, Judge Smith gifted funds to establish an Investment Club at Midland, which he continues to support.
