Have you considered your housing options at The University of Texas at Austin? Living on campus is an essential part of the college experience. The Women in Engineering Program (WEP) offers a Residential Learning Community in the Kinsolving Residence Hall. In this issue of WE Connect, we share the experiences from past participants of the WEP Kinsolving Residential Community.

We also invite you to join us for our WE Connect on Saturday, February 28, 2015.  Not only can you hear all about what WEP and UT have to offer, but this is a special WE Connect held in conjunction with Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (Girl Day).  At this event, you can volunteer and provide engineering outreach to 1st-8th grade girls!
WEP Kinsolving Residential Learning Community: I Love Where I Live!

Mona Lotfi, a Sophomore Civil Engineering Student, and  Rebecca Hecker, a Sophomore Petroleum Engineering Student, are both Peer Assistant Leaders (PALs) for WEP's Kinsolving Residential Learning Community. Both live in Kinsolving South and provide advice and support to the first-year engineering women residing in Kinsolving.  Here's what they have to say about Kinsolving:

"Kinsolving Residence Hall has been our home for the last two years and so far WE HAVE LOVED IT! It is a great option for first-year engineering women, because it is a five minute walk from the Engineering Complex (where most of the engineering classes are located). Our best friends at UT are people we met doing homework in Kinsolving during freshman year.

Kinsolving is nice, because you get to know your neighbors very well. Most of them are science and engineering students, which means you already have a lot in common with each other.

The dorm is quiet, which is very convenient for studying. There's a dining hall downstairs along with a market. Kinsolving has a kitchen that is fantastic for getting together with a group of friends and making dinner on Fridays. There is also a recreation area with a pool table, ping pong table, workout rooms, TV, sundeck and a variety of study rooms.

Living in Kinsolving makes it easy to connect with other engineering students through group dinners, attending tutoring together, and having various adventures around campus or Austin. The Resident Assistants offer many fun and informative events as well. Kinsolving is a great community filled encouragement, laughter and built-in Physics study groups. We have loved living here and look forward to the rest of the year!"

WE Connect at Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

Saturday, February 28, 2015

9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (or "Girl Day") provides an afternoon of fun-filled engineering hands-on activities for over 2,000 girls from Central Texas. This huge undertaking takes more than 800 volunteers to accomplish including - engineering students, faculty and staff, girl-serving organizations (like the Girl Scouts and Girlstart), and outside organizations such as the Thinkery.

We have room for a small group of women who have been admitted to the Cockrell School to join us and VOLUNTEER at this wonderful event. Admitted students will attend the WE Connect session in the morning, chat, and have lunch with engineering students and then help facilitate and lead an engineering activity during Girl Day. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Cockrell School and teach young girls what engineering is all about!

Spaces for this WE Connect session are limited. Volunteers must commit to attending the WE Connect session AND volunteering for the duration of Girl Day. The schedule is a follows:

  • 9:30 - 10:00 a.m. - Welcome & Overview of WEP
  • 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. - Girl Day Volunteer Training
  • 11:00 - 11:45 a.m. - Lunch with Current Engineering Students
