Carrying a Big Stick
explores a dynamic range of possibilities for the 21st century dance teaching artist. Illuminating how all dance knowledge and its many identities can collectively be shaped
into a new formation, Law broadens our perspective
of
what it means to know dance.

Through the reflective essential question "What makes a good dance and how do we know this?" this workshop is about putting dance back into the everyday experience. The goal of Ann's teaching is to integrate the art of dance, dance artists and their communities, heightening vitality and increasing fulfillment through a critical and aesthetic experience.

Patricia had a chance to take an earlier version of this workshop on a visit to Chattanooga, Tennessee where Ann lives, works, performs and produces music and dance. She invited Ann to teach simply because dancing with those big sticks is something she felt all dance teaching artists and classroom teachers should experience to help process the fear and limitations we sometimes bring to dance teaching. We hope that you will enjoy this formidable demonstration class. To reserve your space, contact Alisa Rasera ([email protected])

Ann Law has been dancing since the age of three, beginning her dance studies in Southern California. As a young dancer, she moved to San Francisco, receiving her BA in Dance from Mills College. Subsequent years were spent teaching and creating new dances in Miami, Philadelphia, and New York City. She earned an MA in Dance Education at University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Throughout her studies of somatic practices, observing dance on all levels and engaging in the art of improvisation, she has consistently built upon her dance experience. In Chattanooga, Tennessee, Ann has found a community of artists with which to engage fully, and co-created Barking Legs Theater, an environment that enriches these collaborations. Ann's ongoing investigations in her dance teachings and practice encourage the nurturing of critical thinkers capable of social change. She is dedicated to creating community.
