 Elevating Preaching Conference - Tomorrow, September 23, 8:30am - Wait Chapel | T here will be no regular class meetings from 9:00am to 4:00pm tomorrow, so that all students can participate in this conference. We have a strong line-up of some of the best teachers of preaching in the country: Anna Carter Florence, Thomas G. Long, and Luke A. Powery. If you did not pre-register, you will not be able to attend a small group lunch session with one of the preachers. All students who plan on attending the conference, please wear your Wake Div apparel. The conference day will go as follows:

 Pathways in Ministry: Time Management and Self Care - Wednesday, September 25, 11:00am - Wingate 201 |
Rev. Bill Wilson, President of the Center for Congregational Health, will be leading a workshop on time management and self care in ministry. Bill will introduce concrete ways to manage priorities in the midst of ministry callings that can place unusual and unbounded demands on your time, attention, and energy. This is a free workshop, offered under the auspices of Pathways in Ministry program, that would cost you a good chunk of money were you to take it after you graduate. Please RSVP to John Senior today so we know how much food to provide. It's an amazing opportunity not to be missed!

 Denominational Day - National Baptist Convention - Thursday, September 26 | This week we will celebrate the first National Baptist Convention Day at the School of Divinity. Join us for community worship at 11:00am with preacher Rev. Dr. Clifford Jones, Senior Pastor of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC, followed by community lunch. For those students who are affiliated with the National Baptist Convention or are interested in learning more, Dr. Jones and other local clergy will meet at 12:15pm in Wingate 302 to discuss affiliation with the NBC ways to navigate the ordination process, and how to find a ministry position. Volunteer Resources and Service Projects | Monique Swaby, MDiv '15, is serving as the Community Engagement Coordinator, a new position in the Office of Leadership Development at Wake Div. This year she will help provide resources to engage and volunteer on campus as well as locally in the community. She will also help to organize larger service projects for the school as interest dictates. If you have any ideas, wish to speak with Monique, or have any questions about this role or how to engage in the community, please feel free to email her. More resources will be available over the course of this year.
Financial Assistance Funds Available | The School of Divinity offers two financial resources to help students: Stealey's Purse for students in emergency financial situations and Student Academic Conference Grants to attend academic or denominational conferences. About the play: In October 1997, Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die tied to a fence post in Laramie, Wyoming. Techtonic Theatre Project traveled to Laramie to talk to the town in the murder's aftermath. This moving and insightful piece of theatre resulted from those interviews. Butterfield-Jones served as the National Youth Vote Director for the Obama for America campaign from 2011-2013 and served in the Obama Administration from 2009-2011 as the Deputy Director of Public Affairs for International Trade. Oktoberfest 2013 - Friday, September 27, 5:00pm - Manchester Plaza | Oktoberfest is the traditional German festival known for hearty food, beer, oom-pah music, and games. This event is free and open to al WFU faculty, students, and staff. The event will feature traditional German food such as bratwurst and sauerkraut, and some "Oktoberfesbier" (authentic German beer). "Things Wondrous and Humble: American Still Life" Exhibition at Reynolda House Museum of American Art | Explore both traditional and unexpected approaches to still life in this exhibition featuring some of the finest examples of still life from collections across the state. Explore how objects appeal to the senses, how tabletop arrangements become an artist's study tool, and how any object can have meaning. Now through December 8th. >>More information. Life After Death: The Day of the Dead in Mexico at the Museum of Anthropology | MOA's annual exhibit includes new information with sections about the celebration's history and its unique folk art. The centerpiece is a traditional Mexican ofrenda: a home altar with sugar skulls, colorful tissue paper cutouts, food and beverage offerings, marigolds, and photos of deceased relatives to honor the dead. A children's ofrenda and a digital photo essay illustrating different aspects of the celebration are also on display. Text is in English and Spanish.
Admission is free. Exhibit runs through December 13.
