From the Desk of Dr. Sinnott... |
As we welcome in a new academic year, it is important to reflect upon some of the goals developed with Dean Klasko at the first part of December and note our progress over the past 6 months.
One of our top priorities was to enhance the clinical presence of the DoIM and diversify recruitment to welcome faculty from other institutions - to that end we have increased the hospitalist core and captured our best and brightest graduates in internal medicine, added two infectious disease physicians, hired one hematologist and are recruiting another, added a rheumatologist, are in the process of recruiting a faculty member for palliative care, and are developing a geriatric emergency department. These new faculty members are from Mayo Clinic, Harvard, University of Oklahoma, University of Nebraska, and top international universities. We also developed a strategic plan and held a series of four meetings with the thought leaders of the department. Our resulting plan of action for the future will guide our development over the next several years. Full details of our strategic plan will be shared in the weeks to come.
To enhance the intellectual climate in the department, we have enhanced grand rounds, changed the morning report system at Tampa General by merging it with noon conference, and we've celebrated our academic achievements at our internal medicine graduation ceremony. We worked to promote internal communications within the department and divisions and have an active newsletter, developed an intranet, and created a new brand. Our departmental polo shirts, lanyards and hats are in the process of being distributed.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of innovative, patient-centered research. To enhance our research efforts, we are developing a research support structure within the Chairman's office, and have hired new researchers across many of our divisions and centers. We also welcome internationally recognized Benjamin Djulbegovic, MD who will build our Division of Evidence Based Medicine and add impact to the research efforts of our divisions and centers.
Lastly, it is with sadness that we hear Dean Klasko has accepted a position at the prestigious Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Dean Klasko will be missed as he has been the most transformative individuals in the Morsani College of Medicine's history. It is important that his legacy of entrepreneurialism and innovation live on. As co-chair of the search committee I pledge I will do my best to see this happen. We wish Dean Klasko luck as he moves to Philadelphia this Fall.
Warmly,
John
John T Sinnott MD FACP
Chairman
Department of Internal Medicine

Dr. Allan Goldman Receives Proclamation As He Continues To Build the Department of Internal Medicine
At our June 6th Departmental Graduation, Dr. Goldman was surprised as Dr. Sinnott and Mrs. Goldman announced that Mayor Buckhorn proclaimed June 6th as Dr. Allan L Goldman Day. "I was completely shocked, I had no idea," said Dr. Goldman. "It was a wonderful surprise".
After 18 years serving as Chairman of our Department, Dr. Allan Goldman remains an integral asset to our programs and is helping build our bridge to our future in multiple ways.
|
Dean Klasko, residents, fellows, faculty and staff applaud as Dr. Goldman takes the stage to accept his proclamation by the City of Tampa declaring June 6th Allan L Goldman Day. |
As Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Chair of the GME committee, Dr. Goldman oversees our residency programs and is working to strengthen it and expand them.
His immediate goal is to make it more competitive so that more USF medical students choose to continue their education with us.
"We spend four years preparing medical students to become excellent doctors, investing time and resources to ensure they receive a quality education," says Dr. Goldman. "It is our hope they stay in-state to complete their residency programs so we can optimally serve our communities."
But with the growing number of medical school graduates, we often times bid our students farewell as they take residencies in other states. Odds are doctors will remain in the state they completed their residency in. "We invest so much in our students and then we miss opportunities to retain excellently trained physicians because they leave," he said.
One thing Dr. Goldman has noticed over the years is that our residency programs have dramatically improved the quality care of the hospitals they rotate in. That is why he is working to develop new residency programs at other institutions and HCAs around the state, through which we can provide other services such as conferences and CAMLS training. This will also lead to increased affiliations with USF and diversify our sources of revenue.
Dr. Goldman's long-term goal is to develop a residency program at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, but he says this will take some time.
"A residency program with LRMC will be a dynamite combo", he says. "But we first have to build a faculty base and prepare that hospital for supporting a residency program".
The MCOM currently has 750 residents and the DoIM has 265 of them. The goal is to add 200 to 250 at Lakeland Regional as the program is built.
Dr. Goldman is also Senior Associate Dean of Alumni Relations. Through this effort, he is working with other members of the USF Health leadership team to develop alumni outreach and stewardship with medical graduates and former residents, fellows and faculty.
Another exciting initiative is the development of our Physician Assistant Program, for which Dr. Goldman serves as Medical Director. He recruited its Program Director, David Kotun, EdD, PA-C, DFAAPA, and together they have been working to create the program. More on the PA program will be in our next e-newsletter.
