Head of School
This has been a week to celebrate the diversity of talents here at St. Mary's. The past week was filled with many St. Mary's A-HA moments. I was overwhelmed by the St. Mary's snapshot this week which was filled with the myriad of talent and gifts of our students, faculty, staff, coaches, parents and board members! Principal DiMaiti and I had the great pleasure of attending the boys basketball games, the girls basketball games, the girls hockey games and the drama festival this week. We both came away with a deep appreciation and recognition of the abundance of gifts and spirit here at St. Mary's. We want to take a minute to thank the parents, families, students, faculty, staff, coaches, moderators and students who participate in all of these incredible events. You represent St. Mary's with such passion and competitive spirit. We are truly a community at St. Mary's! Principal DiMaiti and I talked about how we hold one another up and cherish the many moments of collaboration and competition. One of the most moving moments of the week for me was at the end of the girls basketball game where they lost a heartbreaker to Watertown. Our girls and their coaches and parents were clearly disappointed, but our girls handled the disappointment with poise and grace and sportswomenship! We were so proud of their spirit and watched as they shook hands with their opponents and wished them well on the next game. I also wanted to mention an experience that Principal DiMaiti and I participated in with Ms. Pooles's classes this week. We were asked to do mock college interviews with her seniors. We were both so impressed with the preparation, self-awareness and presentation of the students who were interviewed. They all had an opportunity to reflect and score their peers performance in an effort to help each student to grow and become more comfortable with public speaking and presentation. We are very blessed to have these opportunities here at St. Mary's. A-HA indeed!
We ask for your prayers for our faculty, staff and board members who lost family members this week. We pray for Mrs. Bev Buckley, Mr. Dave Giarusso and our Board Chair, Jack King and his wife Mary. St. Mary's will hold you in our prayers.

Good Luck to the Lady Spartan girls hockey team as they take on Woburn in the Division 1 state semi-final round on Sunday in Chelmsford. They defeated Newton North and Austin Prep. to reach the state Final Four round.

Ms. DeAmato and pGlolab
The video attached is from the most recent AP Biology lab. The students transferred a gene from a bioluminescent jellyfish into a sample of bacteria. As a result of this transformation, the bacterial cultures that were grown in a plate that contained arabinose (a sugar) display a green glow when viewed under an ultraviolet light.

STEM Ed Announcement: Computer Science for HS Girls
Boston University is pleased to announce that it will host the 3rd annual Artemis Project@BU. Artemis is a five-week computer science summer program for 8th grade girls who will be entering 9th grade in September 2013. Artemis introduces participants to the creative thinking and problem-solving skills that are at the core of computer science.
Artemis sparks the interest of girls by making fundamental topics in computer science fun and engaging, incorporating lessons with hands-on activities as well as real-world applications. Artemis teaches girls how to design their own websites in HTML/CSS, build and program robotics, and create games using programming languages such as Java, Python, Scheme and Visual Basics. Sample conceptual topics included introduction to search and sort algorithms, cryptography, artificial intelligence, circuits, and recursion through Towers of Hanoi. In addition, students go on weekly field trips and hear from a variety of guest speakers. We hope that students will leave Artemis with both the practical skills and the conceptual background that will help them succeed.
The program will be held in Boston University's Photonics Center from July 1 through August 2nd, 2013 M-F from 9:00-3:00. The program is free of charge, but once accepted, participants are required to a $100 registration free. Please note, this is a day program and neither transportation nor accommodations available. For more information and to apply, please visit the program website at http://www.bu.edu/lernet/artemis. |
