Ever since our Women's History Month celebration we can't stop honoring Brave Women!

In celebration of the upcoming Martin Luther King Day,
we are celebrating two brave women in the Civil Rights Movement!

Rosa Parks

Coretta Scott King

Civil rights activist Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her refusal to surrender her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus spurred a city-wide boycott. The city of Montgomery had no choice but to lift the law requiring segregation on public buses. Rosa Parks received many accolades during her lifetime, including the NAACP's highest award.

Coretta Scott King was an American civil rights activist and the wife of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. She established a distinguished career in activism in her own right. Working side-by-side with her husband, she took part in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and worked to pass the Civil Rights Act. After King's death, she founded the Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta.

HEART OF A SATURDAY NIGHT-
 A TOM WAITS EVENING W/
ELLEN KAYE & JED DISTLER

Ellen Kaye and Jed Distler

HEART OF A SATURDAY NIGHT
An Evening of Tom Waits
With
 ELLEN KAYE & JED DISTLER

Saturday, January 31st
8:30pm & 10pm

Grapefruit moon, one star shining,
shining down on me
Heard that tune, now I'm pining,
Honey, can't you see
Cause every time I hear that melody,
something breaks inside
Grapefruit moon, one star shining
can't turn back the tide
- Written by Tom Waits -

After many years, Ellen and Jed are coming together again to revel in Tom Waits. They both share a deep love and abiding affection for Mr. Waits' work.
When they first met at Sarah Lawrence in 1979 they performed Grapefruit Moon together.
In 1998, on the CD 2 AM, they recorded his songs
Eggs and Sausage and Muriel
Over the years Distler and Kaye have  taken their
Tom Waits renditions from
The Monkey Bar to the Angry Squire,
to Cornelia Street Cafe and beyond.
On January 31st they'll be exploring new tunes and immersing themselves in their old favorites as well
as they look deep into The Heart of a Saturday Night.

About Katye Grace
Kayte's music is an explosion of folk, blues, pop and rock, held together by warm-voiced melodies and rich, resonant lyrics.  The Washington Post called Kayte a "talented musician" who "writes great pop songs with smart lyrics and a country feel" and declared the "Written On" album (featuring 5 time Grammy Award winning bassist Victor Wooten) an "impressive debut."  The Washington Post, YouTube, The Augusta Chronicle, NBC and ABC in Georgia, Columbia Spectator, Ivy League Christian Observer and Washingtonian Magazine have featured Kayte. She has released 3 albums, performed in NYC on a seven-city tour of the South (2009) and a 20 city, 22 show cross-country tour (2010)... Read More>

UN WOMEN

When i was a boy

Cheryl Benton, founder of The Three Tomatoes and President of the NY Chapter of the US National Committee for UN Women, first saw Ellen performing When I Was A Boy at The Metropolitan Room in Chelsea. Inspired by Ellen's performance, Cheryl invited her to perform at the 11th Annual UN Women Luncheon in March 2012.

Today, Ellen and Cheryl join forces once again in hopes of eliminating gender inequality once and for all.  They've decided to use the great Dar Williams tune When I Was A Boy to further awareness for the cause

BEN STROUSE
HEY BOY

HEY BOY-
When his parents tell him he isn't big enough to care for a shelter dog, a small boy begins his struggle to "grow up faster than anybody!"

Over the years, as the boy learns to tie his shoes, to write homework, and to remember other people's birthdays. He visits the shelter to spend time with his friend and dream about the future.

And in the end, his love blossoms into the strength and courage he needs to redeem their years apart.

Bedtime stories come in all shapes and sizes, and in this one a child facing the challenge of growing up learns that love can be stronger than sadness, more enduring than time, and a key to happiness in an imperfect world.

GRACE GARLAND -
Songwriter--Actress--Singer

Why did I write "Loneliness Makes You Stupid?" Maybe it was the 3a.m. wake-up call from one of my girlfriends hiding in her own bathroom, asking in a hushed tone , "What do I do with an uncircumcised penis?" Maybe it was the count-less and unbelievable love-tales of betrayal shared by females of all ages and ethnicity, while we dried our nails at a salon! Or... maybe... it was the boyfriend who never spent the night after you know what... because (and these were his exact words)... "I like to use my own toothbrush in the morning."...Read More>
