Early in the morning on Thursday, the Senate voted unanimously to approve
HB. 6542, which will permanently protect 825 acres of state-owned farmland at the Southbury Training School. The bill had previously passed the House by a unanimous vote of 135 to 0, and now
heads to the Governor for his signature!
This bill was one of Working Lands Alliance's top priorities for this legislative session, and numerous hours went in to advocating for this bill and working with key partners to see this through to successful passage. WLA is delighted to see such strong bipartisan support for this bill in both chambers, and commends the Governor for his leadership in this effort.
This important and potentially precedent-setting bill will permanently protect a large tract of prime farmland, and could set the stage for the preservation of other key farmland parcels owned by the State. WLA hopes this effort will be a model that the State can replicate, allowing CT to significantly increase the pace of farmland preservation efforts.
Please join us in celebrating this achievement!
If you have a moment, email or call Governor Malloy, Commissioner of Agriculture Steven Reviczky, and leadership in the House and Senate and thank them for their outstanding support of this bill:
