The finals for the local Family PLUS (Parent Leading, Uniting, and Serving) Cook-Off competition were held on October 23rd at the Carl and Alleen McKinney Unit. Competing families included the Alvarado Family, Colt Stacy's Team, Robinson Family, and Ayala Family. Each family finalist was assigned a cooking station - all stocked with the same ingredients. Fifteen minutes into the competition the secret ingredient, blueberries, was introduced and had to be used by each family. The objective of the Cook-Off was to use the ingredients to make the most mouthwatering theme dish in just one hour. Dishes were judged based on presentation, conformance to the theme, taste, and originality. Although the judging was close, the winning family team was the Alvarado Family from the Rogers Unit.
Marissa Kargas, anchor for KNWA-TV news, was the Master of Ceremonies for the event. Event judges (pictured here with the Alvarado family) include State Senator Bart Hester, Pinnacle International Real Estate Group; John Scholes, VP Walmart International at Kimberly-Clark; Scott Winchester, Director of Sales with Blue Rhino; and Trent Weller, VP Beverages Sam's Club. 2015.

Rogers Kids Build 747 Gliders

Thanks to funding from the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium, Rogers and Bella Vista kids will be engaged in a variety of hands on S.T.E.A.M activities that will involve aerodynamics and flight.  Here Boys & Girls Club of Benton County Rogers Unit kids are building 747 gliders.  Once build they will experiment with different wing shapes and weight shifts that may affect the flight of their gliders.  Thanks to the grant funds, activities of this nature will be ongoing through May of 2015.

The Boys & Girls Club of Benton County received a $5,000 grant through the Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District. The grant will enable more program space and the further installation of security cameras to enhance the safety of our kids at the Carl & Alleen McKinney Unit.  The grant was facilitated through the support of State Representative Jim Dotson.  Representative Dotson has been a long-time champion of the children of Benton County.

Keeping it Clean At McKinney Unit
Volunteers came to the McKinney Unit to help the Torch Club learn about hygiene.  While there, they played some games and theme activities activities, and had a blast discussing the "touchy" subject with the kids.  Everyone had a great time and got some solid information about "keeping it clean".

Toy Bowl Winds Down Football Season

The 2014 Football Season is all but a memory.  It was a great year full of fun, skill learning and competition. In the Toy Bowl, the Bears came out in top in the 3rd & 4th grade division and the Buccaneers won the 5th & 6th grade division. While the younger teams competed in the Toy bowl, the 7th grade teams memorialized their fallen friend and teammate Floyd Smith, #22, who passed away early in the season.  As the teams were announced, each player placed their jersey at the 22 yard line.  Seen here in black is Lincoln, Washington is red, and Fulbright is green.
