STUDENTS: Will You Enter the Valentine's Card Contest for Shelter Pets Feb. 8, 2015?

City of Long Beach Animal Care Services, Haute Dogs, Justin Rudd, and Westerly School of Long Beach are sponsoring the 6th-annual handmade Valentine's card contest for Long Beach-area students (K-12) to create lovable Valentine's cards for the 120+ dogs and 50+ cats housed at the Long Beach Animal Care Services shelter. Hundreds of cards were submitted last year.

CARDS from adults are encouraged, too, but will not be judged in the contest. Rudd says, "There are hundreds of dogs and cats in our city who are looking for love and affection while waiting for forever homes. Let's show them our love this season. We encourage classrooms, scout groups, church youth groups, and other organizations to create cards for the animals."

Cards should be received at Long Beach Animal Care Services, 7700 E. Spring St., Long Beach, CA 90808, on or before noon on Sun., Feb. 8, 2015. Students should place their name, grade level, teacher's name and school name on the very back of the card. Cards will not be returned.

WIN A PIZZA PARTY! The student who creates the winning card will receive a pizza party for their friends, classroom or group (up to 30 people). Judging will take into consideration the grade level of the student, and will be based on creativity, originality, and first impression. The folded cards should not exceed 5x7, and should not include any particular animal's name. Volunteers will randomly assign a card to an animal's kennel. The goal is to get at least one card per animal that will be attached to each pet's kennel through the Valentine's Day week.

In addition to the regular shelter hours, the public is invited to come view the cards and their creators, spend time with the animals and "fall in love" during the special Yappy Hour from noon to 1 p.m., where punch and cookies will be served to human guests by students at Westerly School, soft love songs will be playing, the shelter animals will receive special Valentine's goodies, and awards will be announced for the best Valentine's cards.

Justin Rudd and Long Beach beauty queens will be hosting the event. The Yappy Hour will surely allow visitors to find a 4-legged sweetheart to love.

- See more at: http://hautedogs.org/

Regular shelter hours are Wed. thru Fri. 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sat. thru Sun. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shelter is closed Mon. and Tues. Direct any questions to Justin@JustinRudd.com. Parking is free. Visit the shelter online at http://longbeach.gov/acs

Will you nominate an unsung hero and help them to get $500 or more from Justin's nonprofit Community Action Team?  Deadline is Jan. 21.

$1,000 Givers, Long Beach Giving Project
Nominate a Long Beach HeroThe annual LONG BEACH HEROES awards will be presented by Justin Rudd's nonprofit Community Action Team on Sun., Jan. 25, 2015, at Bay Shore Church. Funded by proceeds from the Long Beach Turkey Trot

DO YOU HAVE a relative, a friend or a co-worker who is having a big impact in the Long Beach area? In every neighborhood, there are "unsung heroes" - volunteers and paid professionals who go well beyond their expected duties. Perhaps the person you nominate is active in education, the environment, animal welfare, youth or sports. Or, maybe there is no one "category" for which the person champions. We want to know about people you think should be recognized. WE WANT TO recognize the unsung heroes and help them to financially continue doing what they are doing.
1. Come up with some reasons that you think make your nominee unique and remarkable.  Also, think through the kind of impact the person has made here in our community this past year (2014).
2. Go to our online {nomination form} and tell us about your hero.  Remember, in order for your hero to move along in the selection process, it's important for you to answer each question directly on the online form.  Remember, the information you share with us will be shared with the general public and media if your nominee is selected.  TIP: We highly suggest that you first write and save the answers to the questions in a word-processing document, in case you want to re-submit your nomination, you can "cut-and-paste" those answers into the form without re-writing them.
3.  Be sure to click "submit" when you are satisfied with the info you have typed in.  You'll get a confirmation email.
4. Nominations for 2014 Long Beach Hero awards must be received by MIDNIGHT on Wed., Jan. 21, 2015.
5. Make sure that both the nominator and nominee would be able to attend, if selected, the dinner ceremony in Belmont Shore.
6. Nominees and nominators who are finalists will be contacted by email by approx. Thurs. evening, Jan. 22, 2015.

NOTE: previous Long Beach Heroes are not eligible to be recognized again.
