Bees

It has been sad and a bit frustrating following the sad story of the bee deaths in Wilsonville and Hillsboro. http://www.kgw.com/home/ODA-Insecticide-to-blame-for-bumblebee-deaths-212514511.html

Luckily, Pacific Landscape has no connection to either. Although we do treat trees for Aphid control, we do not use the Safari pesticide suspected in the death of the bees.

We did receive an e-mail last week from a tenant of a retail center we maintain asking if we sprayed the trees in Wilsonville incident and if we used Safari pesticide. It was this inquiry that prompted us to clarify we had no connection to the bee deaths and don't use that pesticide. However tragic the incident is, we hope all would not rush to judgment and allow the Oregon Department of Agriculture to do their investigation before a "villain" is created.

Our provision of Plant Health Care does consist of the use of pesticides. We do carefully research to use the least toxic to non-target organisms. For that reason, we have not used Safari and many other legal but more toxic insecticides. In a perfect world, no toxic chemicals would be used but many of our customers want to protect their plants from damage caused by predator insects. When possible, we use organic or biological products but most have limited effectiveness. When chemical control is required, we select the chemical with the least environmental impact.

irrigation June Irrigation Need Varies But Summer Is Finally Here

This has been another typical start to the summer irrigation season with significant variability and wet and dry stretches making irrigation planning challenging. However, summer has arrived and we are beginning full summer irrigation programming this week with the current excessive heat. We monitor and adjust based on weather forecasts to save when possible. It is this highly variable weather that makes weather based irrigation so valuable. Our 150+ installed weather based controller have been saving those customers greatly this year.

With or without a weather based controller, we believe our irrigation practices are better than most other contractors. During the summer, we see most other companies watering 5, 6 or even 7 days per week whereas we only water 3-4 days per week. We water less frequently but more thoroughly with leads to healthier deeper rooting lawns. This also saves water and money.

Irrigation every day encourages shallow roots and can lead to compaction and poor soil aeration. We also break up our irrigation time in to 2-3 cycles each watering. This allows the water time to absorb into the ground, avoiding run-off.

Irrigating less frequently and with several cycles each watering day is the most efficient and effective irrigation practice.

sustain Fifth Annual Sustainability Fair A Huge Success

We would like to thank those who attended our fifth annual Sustainability Fair on Thursday, June 20th. It was another great event and as promised, it did not rain despite the forecast. We believe all who attended had a great time and learned a lot. Thank you to IREM for hosting our seminars to provide Real Estate recertification credit.

We are excited to improve every year and continue to think of ways to enhance the experience for all. As with our sustainability initiatives, our Sustainability Fair will continue to evolve. If you attended, we would love to get your feedback on how to improve the event in the future. If you didn't attend, we would still love to get your input on what you would like to see in future events. Any ideas can be submitted to [email protected]

mowerWe Raise Mowing Height in Summer

As summer heats up and dries out, grass can go through a stress period even when irrigated. To reduce the summer stress and reduce irrigation need, we raise our mowing height. Taller stands of grass with taller grass blade will better shade the soil surface to conserve moisture and increase plant strengthening photosynthesis. Some people like lower lawn mowing heights which we can do but unless asked to keep heights low, we are raising heights now to help maintain healthier lawns.
