What I'm thinking...by Tiffany Wilmot
We received a lot of great feedback on our newsletter last month. Growth in any system can happen fast and you can find our write-up here I've enjoyed sharing the article and several people asked questions like, "I understand exponential functions much better than I ever have, but what do you mean when you talk about current world resources being on the "fast-growth" portion of the curve?" So this month, we thought we would take one exponential curve and talk about its ramifications for the real world.

Population is an obvious topic, as it effects resource use for everything from water to raw materials to food. According to the
United Nations, world population surpassed 7 Billion toward the end of 2011 and is currently growing at a rate of about 1.1%. To calculate how fast population will double in size; 70 years divided by a growth rate of 1.1% is 64 years. In other words, at the current rate of growth,

world population would double again to 14 Billion by 2076.

When you work with numbers of that size, the human mind really doesn't do a good job of grasping the math. Let's break that rate of growth down to something smaller, something you could easily explain to a friend. Worldometers' population clock gave me a figure of 7,095,396,000 - about 7.1 Billion. Taking our given rate of change at 1.1% of 7.1 Billion and dividing by 365 is 214,000. That means, each and every day this year we are adding 214,000 people to our world population. To put that in perspective, that is like creating 100 cities the size of Nashville this year.  Then 100 Nashvilles next year.  Where would you put them all?

So, the reality is that we have to feed, clothe and eventually find work for all of those 214,000 new people -  and the 214,000 people who will be here tomorrow, and the 214,000 the day after that. We have to find the resources for enough people to fill a good sized US city every day. That's part of the reason I believe in what I do and feel our work is so important. Not long ago, two of those new people were my own baby girls.
