A mid-year State audit of Jumoke Academy at Milner School last month cited the changes percolating so far - and many significant challenges that lie ahead - on the road to what would be an historic turnaround.

 

If it works, the Vine Street school will make a quantum leap, from poster-child-for-failure to exemplary success story.  Can it be done?

In January 2012, Achievement First parents and children, 100-strong, persuaded the Hartford Board of Education to approve their high school expansion.  This week, there was a different show of strength: More than 60 adult education students and supporters took their case to the Board, to fight the proposed move of the program to Capital Community College.  The two events mark the highest levels of public advocacy seen at a Board meeting in recent memory.

Bank of America has awarded Achieve Hartford! a $10,000 grant, which this independent, nonprofit organization will use for its continuing efforts to sustain reform in the Hartford Public Schools.  Executive Director Paul Holzer received the check from BoA's Neysa Gomez, the Park Street Bank Manager, and Lizneirie Santiago.
