December 2014
"Building Lives of Excellence Upon the Foundation of Christ"
 Dear Concordia Parents and Friends,

In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."  This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'"                                                                                                                                              Matthew 3:1-3

The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way" ... "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' "  And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.                     Mark 1:1-4

In the four weeks leading up to Christmas Day, the church celebrates the season of Advent (a word derived from Latin meaning "to come or arrival").  It is an anticipatory set which causes us to want to prepare and be ready for this big event that is coming.  Our homes and often our churches display different decorations like Christmas trees, candles, lights, blue paraments, wreaths, etc. which are carefully selected and prepared to make everything look just right for Christmas.  The time to coordinate everything, let alone the time to shop and buy presents, bake cookies, wrap gifts, hang lights, etc. is substantial, for sure.

What about us?  How much time will we spend preparing for Christmas - for one day of the year? Hours upon hours of planning and preparation so that everything is just right and beautiful for others to see and admire.  Obviously, Christmas is a very important day of the year - as it should be, especially for Christians as we celebrate God's greatest gift to mankind, His Only Son, Jesus Christ, the Savior.  God prepared to send His Son to earth to save us from our sins thousands of years before Jesus arrived as a baby in the manger.  And, God promised and is preparing to send His Son again to gather all believers and take us to heaven on judgment day.  John the Baptist prepared the people a couple of thousand years ago and the Bible is our current reminder that we need to be prepared for Jesus' second coming.

So, are you ready?  How much time are you willing to take to prepare your heart, your life for that one day when Christ returns?  Are we willing to take the time to make the right preparations (repentance, forgiveness, faith, service, etc.)?  Is the world's celebration of Christmas more important in our thoughts and actions than the Christian's perspective of what Christmas is really all about - the celebration of Christ's birth?  May God's grace and mercy allow us to focus on the real reason for the season - I mean, this one day is named after Him - Merry CHRISTmas!

                                                                                                In HIS Service,

                                                                                                  Principal Mark M. Bahr

BLESSED CHRISTMAS!

WISHING YOU THE PEACE AND JOY THAT COMES FROM THE KNOWLEDGE

OF THE CHRIST CHILD'S BIRTH.           LUKE 2:10-11

Admissions News

Our Future Freshman Day was a huge success this year!  With the largest attendance ever, a heartfelt "THANKS" to all the hard-working volunteers, student ambassadors and faculty that spent long hours preparing for this event.  Our 2015-2016 Freshman projections look VERY promising.

We are busy with Shadows joining us for a day's experience at Concordia.  Applications are coming in daily as well.  Scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, is our first of two Open House events.  We call them Admission Information Nights.  Help us spread the word to encourage others to join us on that date to take a look at Concordia Lutheran High School.

Other important dates coming up in Admissions are our first of five scheduled Placement Testing Dates, scheduled for January 17, and the first of three Enrollment meetings, scheduled for February 9.  Reserving a spot for any of the Admissions events is easy...just check our website in January.

Course Selections

The counselors will be in the classrooms on January 9, 2015.  They will be distributing the following materials to take home to parents which will guide them in choosing course selections for the following school year:

  • Course selection sheets for 2015-2016 school year
  • 4 year plans (9th & 10th); Credit earned sheets (11th)
  • Instructions on how to complete the course selection sheets

Students have until Wednesday, January 14, to review the information, speak with parents, and decide which courses they wish to take next year.  Following their 4 year plans or their course selection sheets and knowing first semester grades will be invaluable in helping make these choices.  Parents must sign off on the course selection sheet stating satisfaction with student's options.

***Students who sign up for dual credit classes for the following school year must go through the qualification process.  For information about this process, please follow the link below.

Passion 2015 - Parents of Seniors Only

ALL SENIORS
are invited to participate in PASSION 2015.  PASSION 2015 is a movement within Christendom that seeks to:

raise up and encourage the youth of today

to take ownership of their faith and live boldly for Jesus.

There will be over 18,000 17 to 25 year olds from all over the nation gathering to attend this conference.  For the CLHS students who attended last year this was the highlight of their Senior Year.  The conference will begin Friday night and end Sunday Morning, January 30 - Feb 1 (Schedule).   Top communicators of the Gospel of Jesus (Louie Giglio, Matt Chandler, Ben Stuart, and Francis Chan) and top musicians of our time (Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, and David Crowder) will be presenting at PASSION 2015!

The tickets for PASSION 2014 start at $189; however, the leadership at CLHS believes deeply in this opportunity and is willing to defer the cost greatly in order to make this a reality for your senior!  Contact Mrs. Brennan or Mr. Neuhaus if you have any questions.

There are still seats available for this event, so we will extend the registration deadline until December 20th.

Register NOW:  http://www.clhs-tx.org/passion

CLHS will pay the first $100, if you will pay the remaining $90!

Mr. Neuhaus will buy all of the CLHS tickets at the same time.

Student Life

Congratulations to the October Student of the Month award winners: Kendahl Ross (Freshman), Kaelene Krause (Sophomore), Jessica Lawrence (Junior), and Adam Buckley (Senior).  When considering students to nominate for these awards, our faculty members seek to identify those that are demonstrating excellence throughout the school.  Specifically, the faculty members look for excellence in academics, athletics, artistic contributions, musical performance, and volunteer service.  A total of 18 students were nominated for the October awards.  Look for the November/December winners to be included in the newsletter early in 2015.

November was a very busy month for our Student Ambassadors!  Our Student Ambassadors work directly with prospective students when they come to campus for shadow days and for Future Freshmen Day (November 18, 2014).  Student Ambassadors are those CLHS students that were nominated by the faculty and have accepted the calling to be our front-line student helpers.  We had many prospective students (mostly 8th graders) spend a day with us shadowing current CLHS Ambassadors during the latter half of November.  Freshman Kendahl Ross and his shadow, Andrew, were so kind as to pause for a picture on Tuesday, 11-25-14 (see below).

The end of the first semester is right around the corner.  As in previous semesters, final exams will be given during the last three (3) days of the semester: December 17-19.  These three days are half days (no school lunch available).  Here is the first semester final exam schedule:

WednesdayThursdayFriday

12/17/2014
12/18/2014
12/19/2014
8:00 - 10:00Social StudiesScienceForeign Language
10:00 - 12:00MathematicsTheologyEnglish

If a student does not have an exam during a specific testing time, he/she does not need to be on campus.  If a student is on campus but is not actively taking a final, he/she will work quietly in the Cafetorium so as to not disturb those in the building that are testing.  Students may be in Spirit Day dress during finals.  Students enrolled in the following courses must turn in their textbooks for these courses to the table outside the Bookroom by 12:30 PM on Friday, 12-19-14: Speech (Communication Applications), Business Ownership, Economics, Economics Honors, Government, & Sociology.  Please email Mr. Schleicher (Assistant Principal) at schleicherm@clhs-tx.org if you have additional questions.
