  STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE
  ACHIEVING IMPACT
Greetings!

Did you know that almost exactly 20 years has passed since James Thatcher, an accomplished AIDS activist in Ontario, passed away?

James Thatcher (1956-1993)
Thatcher, who died of HIV-related complications on January 2, 1993, spent much of his life pressuring the government to do more for PHAs. More specifically, he stressed the issues of drug distribution, HIV research and standards of care. Diagnosed with HIV in 1988, Thatcher, who had been a co-chair of AIDS ACTION NOW! and a co-founder of HALCO, once handcuffed himself to the office door of the Minister of Health, demanding a meeting. This act embodies the passion he held for the issue of HIV/AIDS in Ontario, a passion that will forever be missed.

Shortly before he passed away, Thatcher had this to say:
"I have lived a charmed life. Although it would have been nice to be around longer, I really have few regrets. I have traveled extensively.  Been around the world. I have had tremendously rewarding times as a gay activist, political hack and an AIDS activist. And at various points, I hope that I have had an impact and made a difference."

As you may have read in last week's Did You Know, Jay Browne passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 13. He led a long and admirable life and accomplished so much in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Ontario. In honour of Jay, we have posted a video from 2008 on our YouTube channel with interviews and reflections from those who knew him best. Please take some time to watch and remember one of the key figures in Ontario's fight against HIV/AIDS.
OCHART View From the Front Lines

We are pleased to announce that the seventh annual OCHART (Ontario Community HIV and AIDS Reporting Tool) report: The View from the Front Lines, is now available online in both French and English!

This report is based upon the data reported twice yearly by community-based HIV/AIDS programs funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the AIDS Bureau and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) Ontario Regional Office, and the AIDS Community Action Program (ACAP).

The View from the Front Lines report gives community-based programs information about services, trends and client needs that they can use to improve existing services and plan new ones. It is produced with the support of the OHTN.

OCHART is a collaborative project of the AIDS Bureau, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and the Public Health Agency of Canada, Ontario Regional Office.

New Rapid Response

We are pleased to have published a brand new Rapid Response: The Willingness of PHAs, living in high-income settings to negotiate condom use and use condoms during sex. This represents our 64th published Rapid Response.

The OHTN Rapid Response Service provides quick access to research evidence. We search the scientific literature and contact subject matter experts to help community-based organizations in Ontario inform policy and decision making, service delivery, and advocate for change.
 Universities Without Walls (UWW) Profile

We have published a new profile for UWW, the educational and training arm of the CIHR Centre for REACH in HIV/AIDS. This time around, we've decided to profile a faculty member involved in UWW.

Timothy Christie is a medical ethicist based out of New Brunswick and a long-time lecturer for UWW. Among other things, we asked him about different phases of the fight against HIV/AIDS, methadone clinics, supervised injection sites, and how he still uses the teachings of Aristotle in his day-to-day work. The article, as well as numerous audio clips from his interview, are posted on the UWW website.
