Every week during the academic year, you'll receive this update. In addition to academic news from Dr. Jill Crainshaw, this email will contain community information, news, and upcoming events. Make note of items that interest you, add the upcoming events and important academic dates to your calendar, and take advantage of all the community offerings.

Welcome New Students | This Fall we welcome 45 new students to the Wake Div community!


Classes Begin - Monday, August 26, 8:00am - Wingate Hall


Direct Deposit for Reimbursements and Account Refunds | Accounts Payable and Student Financial Services are pleased to provide student expense reimbursements and student account refund payments by direct deposit to students.This new service provides several benefits to you including faster and secure payment while also supporting Wake Forest sustainability initiatives. In order to participate in direct deposit, you MUST enroll via WIN by
completing three easy steps. This enrollment is only available via the student WIN login. 

 

No Divinity Classes on Labor Day - Monday, September 2 | Note: If you are taking a class from another department within the University, you are not exempt from attending that class.



Fall Convocation - Thursday, September 5, 11:00am - Wait Chapel
Melissa Rogers, Special Assistant to the President and Executive Director of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, will deliver this year's Fall Convocation address. Rogers is a former faculty member of the School of Divinity. Add to your calendar.


Financial Assistance Funds Available | The School of Divinity offers two financial resources to help students: Stealey's Purse for students in emergency financial situations and Student Academic Conference Grants to attend academic or denominational conferences. More information about these two resources, including how to apply, is online.
 

"My Faith, My World, My Voice" Video Contest | The United Church of Christ invites young adults to submit videos answering this question, "How does your faith transform, connect, or touch the world?", for their contest. The winning prize is $5,000. All videos must be made by young adults (18-35) and must be 60 seconds or less. The last day to submit videos online is October 31, 2013. Seminarians Empowering Revolutionary Vision Conference | You are invited to join the growing movement of fellow seminarians working to integrate their passion for service with a call to ministry by attending a conference on the campus of Princeton Theological Seminary on September 20 - 22. Workshop topics include racial reconciliation, urban and community gardening, economic justice and equality, immigration, LGBT community concerns, and more. There is a $100 registration fee. Love Your Neighbor and Yourself: How Faith Communities Can Help with Substance Abuse, Mental Health, and Chronic Disease Issues - September 9 - Graylyn Conference Center
Hear from renowned expert and innovator, Dr. Gary Gunderson, VP of Faith and Health Ministries at Wake Forest Baptist Health, and Jim Harner, Clinical Director of Paternership for a Dug-Free NC. Come Out of the Wilderness: A Celebration of LGBTQ Spirituality - October 18 & 19 - Green Street UMC, WInston-Salem | You are invited to come out of the wilderness of exclusion and isolation to a weekend fellowship for full inclusion about holistic ministry with/for LGBTQ people and straight allies. Workshop leader is Chris Glaser, author of Coming Out is a Sacrament. Registration fee of $20 (if you register before October 1).     Note: Worship will now be offered twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Lunch will be offered both days.
            Coffee Hour has moved to Wednesdays.

 
Community Worship and Lunch - Tuesday, 11:00am - Davis Chapel | Our first worship service of the year is "Spirit of Fire: Transform," and is the concluding service following opening and closing worship at New Student Orientation based on the theme, Spirit of Fire; Ignite, Guide, Transform.
 
 
Coffee Hour - Wednesday, 11:00am - Lower Auditorium | Bring your mug, a treat to share (if you're able), and enjoy the company of community and conversation.
 
 
Community Worship and Lunch - Thursday, 11:00am - Davis Chapel | Service of Beginnings, honoring our first year students, and the passions and interests they bring into the community.

Taking the Dream Home to Winston-Salem - Wednesday, August 28, 5:30pm - District 12 Corpening Plaza (231 West 1st Street) | On August 28, the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington, North Carolina will heed Dr. King's call at the end of his "I Have a Dream" speech to go home and organize. One of the 13 simultaneous rallies across the state, join together to bring to light the unconstitutional and immoral acts of the NC General Assembly and the influence their decisions have had on local communities. College Colors Day - Friday, August 30 | Wear your black & gold for this annual celebration dedicated to promoting the traditions and spirit that embody the college experience. 
 
 
Reynolda Village Farmers Market - Friday, August 30, 8:00am - 12:00noon | The Reynolda Village Farmers Market will be held each Friday at 8:00 a.m. (weather permitting). Come shop on the Reynolda Village lawn for fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats, and more. 


"Things Wondrous and Humble: American Still Life" Exhibition at Reynolda House Museum of American Art | Explore both traditional and unexpected approaches to still life in this exhibition featuring some of the finest examples of still life from collections across the state. Explore how objects appeal to the senses, how tabletop arrangements become an artist's study tool, and how any object can have meaning. Now through December 8th.
