NEFLIN Interest Groups bring together library staff with similar jobs or interests for discussions, networking and informal programs. Nine subject area groups are scheduled and need your participation. Contact Group Leaders with your ideas, program suggestions or to volunteer to help out.

Bonnie Smith - ALA Emerging Leader

NEFLIN mem  ber Bonnie Smith, Assistant Program Director for Human Resources at the University of Florida, Smathers Libraries was selected by the American Library Association as a 2013 Emerging Leader. As part of this process, she is working on a project to propose strategies for engaging and recruiting recently graduated LIS students to join ALA's Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA). The results of the research and findings will be presented at a poster session during the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. "It's a great opportunity to network with other Emerging Leaders and gain an inside look into the ALA structure," says Bonnie. |

Altamonte Springs City Library ♥ NEFLIN

NEFLIN has retired its laptop lab because it is no longer used enough to justify keeping it. Any equipment that is in good condition is donated to our member libraries. The Altamonte Springs City Library was thrilled to receive these laptops as the result of a random drawing. They are the only library in Seminole County offering computer classes, and were limited to holding them early in the morning before the library opened. Additional computers will allow the library to expand their technology offerings, and provide for portable classes throughout city facilities. Computer teacher Bob McKinniss (pictured standing) was excited to receive the laptops and has already begun holdings classes using them. The library plans to purchase a digital projector to make the most of their new equipment.

Put Down Those Golf Pencils

NEFLIN has renewed its subscription to ZipSurvey, a web-based survey program that is an easy way to collect feedback from patrons, students or staff. No more need for paper surveys and those tiny golf pencils.
NEFLIN does all the programming for you and sends you the tabulated results of the completed surveys. Each NEFLIN member receives unlimited surveys and survey responses for free.

Flagler College - Proctor Library

The Proctor Library anchors the northwest corner of the Flagler College campus - the corner of Valencia and Sevilla Streets. The architecture and design of the three story library, both inside and out, model the College's distinctive Gilded Age style that represents the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, built by Henry M. Flagler as a grand resort in 1888.
The Library offers both an elegant and aesthetic environment to all users while at the same time providing the latest and most current in information services and information technology. It opened in the fall of 1996 and is named for Dr. William Proctor, the College Chancellor and former president (1971-2001).

There must be an intersection of interests between libraries and vendors. But that does not mean both parties have identical objectives or measure of a successful transaction. So the process can be both collaborative as well as confrontational. As these services and products can be mission critical to our libraries and the constituencies served we often have a limited ability to "just say no". Therefore it is important to clearly understand the our objectives behind vendor-related activities, whether as individual libraries or through consortial efforts, and the dynamics and techniques in the negotiation and purchase process that will help these objectives - and the opportunities and limitations of what can be achieved.
This then must be translated into the practical aspects of:
- Negotiating on prices - what are your leverage points?
- Getting group deals for small groups/purchases - is it really a group deal or not?
- Fine print of contracts - what terms really matters in the short and long terms?
- Speeding the process - how can we and the vendors move very fast if need be?
- Some do's and don'ts
This one hour session will provide an overview of these interrelated aspects to help improve our abilities.
