Top Ways to Identify
Health Coaching Candidates

Top Ways to Identify Health Coaching Candidates This Week's Challenge: Health coaching and the tools and technologies supporting it are critical elements of a population health management approach. According to 2012 HIN survey data, nearly 72 percent of healthcare companies use HRAs to identify individuals for their health coaching program. We wanted to see which other ways healthcare companies identify candidates for coaching.

What We Learned: HIN's fourth annual Health Coaching survey documented how more than 150 healthcare organizations use health coaching as well as the financial and clinical outcomes that result. According to the companies who responded to the survey, the top five ways to identify coaching program participants, besides the use of HRAs, are:

  • HRA: 71.6 percent

  • Self-referral: 60.8 percent

  • MD referral: 50 percent

  • Claims data: 45.9 percent

  • Biometrics: 35.1 percent
