On September 14th, 2013, the Live Earth Farm Discovery Program will host Slice, our 5th Annual Dinner on the Farm to support hands-on, farming programs for kids of all ages. We will celebrate Apples and Agriculture in the Pajaro Valley with local food, wine, live music, an auction and great company! The outstanding Chefs Jonathan Miller of Eat Right at Home, and Rebecca Mastoris and Karen Haralson of Vibrant Foods Catering will tantalize your taste buds with a gourmet, multi-course meal featuring sustainable Monterey Bay area farms. Farm News & Tom's ReflectionsCounty Supervisor Kaputt working in Live Earth Farm's Fields
Last week we had an unusual visitor. Santa Cruz County Supervisor Greg Kaputt spent two days working with us in the fields. He arrived on Thursday at 9:00 AM and didn't hesitate to jump right in to work side-by side with our field crew. He said he hadn't had his hands in the dirt for quite some time, but vividly remembers his summers working in the fields cutting lettuce and how hard that was for him. He was surprised by Live Earth Farm's diversity of both crops and people working here. He was especially interested in the farm's Community based business model working side-by-side with the Discovery Program to teach youth, hands-on, the value of healthy food and sustainable farming.

Crop & Field NotesDry-farmed Tomatoes, Apples, and Strawberries
The crop of tomatoes we are now harvesting was sown in a greenhouse in mid-January and transplanted in the field in March. It takes over 6 months from planting the seed to finally harvesting the first tomatoes. To extend our harvest into the fall, we add two additional tomato plantings staggered 3 and 6 weeks apart. Besides "love apples" we are starting to harvest our true apples. The first, the Summerfeld, might make it into our fruitshares this week to replace the strawberries, which are going through their natural seasonal downcycle. Continue reading on our web site

Our Farm Stand is Open
Come visit the Farm on a Saturday and go home with fresh produce. Our Farm Stand is open Saturday's from 10am - 3pm at our Green Valley Barn at 1275 Green Valley Rd near Watsonville.
