SC Innovation Challenge
Notice of Funding Opportunity
The South Carolina Department of Commerce Office of Innovation aims to help make South Carolina a top state in the nation to start and build a high-growth business. To do so, South Carolina must enable entrepreneurship and technology-based economic development successes, foster commercialization of technologies, support the increase of capital to home-grown companies and raise the profile of the state's innovation assets.

As part of achieving its mission, the Department of Commerce Office of Innovation is issuing a notice of funding opportunity, dubbed the South Carolina Innovation Challenge.

The South Carolina Innovation Challenge is open statewide, and offers up to $2 million competitive funding for projects that address the South Carolina Innovation Plan goals:

1) Develop a critical mass of high tech, high impact companies.
2) Grow a supportive, connected innovation community.
3) Support access to capital for companies at all stages of development.
4) Grow workforce talent equipped to work for high tech/high impact companies.

CVP's Recycling Partnership Gets Rolling
Columbia, SC Among Three Inaugural Partner Cities
Curbside Value Partnership is pleased to announce that the Recycling Partnership is executing agreements with three cities.  Columbia, SC; Florence, AL and Richmond, VA have been selected as the inaugural 2014-2015 partner communities; contracts are expected to be finalized shortly.

Unique in the industry, the Recycling Partnership is coupling financial and technical assistance to create system-wide improvements for healthier recovery. Projections show that on average these first cities could realistically increase recovery of recyclable materials by more than 200%, bringing them on par with some of the top performing programs in the country.

The first round of community partners demonstrate a strong willingness to collaborate in creating the best possible recycling program for their citizens. "Our city has focused on strong recycling education and excellent customer service for years, but we believe this opportunity will take us to the next level," says John Hooks, Solid Waste Superintendent with the City of Columbia. "We can leverage this funding and technical expertise to deliver a world-class recovery program to our citizens, and we're eager to get started."

Carton Council Releases New Report on Policy
Well-Crafted Policy Can Be Important Driver to Maximizing Recovery

The Carton Council of North America has recently released a new report which assesses various policies designed to drive recycling of post-consumer packaging and printed paper. The report, "Research and Analysis of Policies that Drive Increased Recycling," provides an overview of selected policies implemented across the United States and identifies best practices both at the state and local levels that private and public sectors can utilize in their efforts. Three main types of policy mechanisms are covered: disposal bans, recycling policies and Pay-As-You-Throw.
