Filipino-American Ministry Hepatitis B Project

For FY13, AAHI partnered with the Filipino-American (Fil-Am)
Ministry of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and
the Migrant Heritage Commission to provide free Hepatitis B
prevention services for the Filipino community. Working closely with the Fil-Am Ministry leaders, we provided free vaccination shots to the Fil-Am community at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church.

In May, at-risk participants were given the final shot in the vaccination series. Participants also had the opportunity to share their feedback regarding the program  by completing our comprehensive, end-of-program survey.

There were a total of 38 participants in the program. Some highlights of the project include:
  • 100% of at-risk participants referred to vaccinations, of whom 85% completed the 3-dose vaccination series
  • 96% of participants encouraged family and friends to get screened
  • 96% of participants reported overall satisfaction with the program

The report containing more in-depth data from the project is now available online: FY13 Fil-Am Ministry Hep B Report.

Reports of previous hepatitis B projects are also available on our website: FY12 SMASH B Report; FY12 ACT Hep B Report

Empowering Community Health Organizations (E.C.H.O.) Project
The Affordable Care Act in Montgomery County

On May 28, AAHI hosted its fifth workshop in the Empowering Community Health Organizations (E.C.H.O.) Project, which provides practical and professional trainings designed to build the capacity and sustainability of community organizations that serve Montgomery County. The focus of the workshop was The Affordable Care Act in Montgomery County, a topic of strong interest in the community.

The workshop was led by Uma Ahluwalia, Director for Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, who presented an overview of how the new health care law will impact Montgomery County. The workshop included a presentation of the demographic profile in Montgomery County, the implementation of the Affordable Care Act at the County level, and audience questions and answers. There was a full house of over 50 attendees representing 27 organizations from the community. We want to thank our speaker, attendees, Health Promoters, Steering Committee, and staff for making this a successful event!

Photos from the event can be viewed on our Community Blog and the workshop summary is here (8 MB).

Our previous workshop summaries are also available online: Grants 101; Grants 102 ; Tackling Grant Budgets.
