The 2013 Sustainable Buildings and Energy SERIES - the Kick Off

We are pleased to present this exciting roundtable to discuss and address critical changes in housing, building, energy and housing.  This is specifically timely for the tri-state area in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the 10s of billions required outlay to rebuild.

 The discussion will include:

  • The NYC Housing Authority’s $550 million Annual Utility Budget
  • NYCHAs Energy Market Forecasting
  • NYCHAs Work with Third Party Suppliers, Renewable energy technologies, such as solar energy, geothermal, wind, etc.
  • Foreseeable Operational and Procedural Changes
  • NYCHAs New Financing Options
  • Building Innovative Partnerships Opportunities
  • Opportunities with NYCHA
  • and, Monitoring of Energy Trends

Our Kick Off PRESENTER:

Mr. Rory Christian, Director of the Department of Energy Finance and Sustainability Management, NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA):    The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) , the largest public housing authority in North America,  is committed to increasing opportunities for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers.  More than 400,000 New Yorkers reside in NYCHA’s 334 public housing developments around the five boroughs.

The Kick Off PRESENTER:

Mr. Rory Christian, Director of the Department of Energy Finance and Sustainability Management, NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA):     At NYCHA, Rory oversees NYCHAs 550 million dollar annual utility budget. Responsibilities include energy market forecasting; utility budgeting; negotiations with utilities and third party suppliers to achieve lower unit costs on energy used; and, efforts to use less energy by increasing energy efficiency through energy conservation measures or operational and procedural changes. Renewable energy technologies, such as solar energy, geothermal, wind, etc. are also researched and implemented.

Additionally, Mr. Christian manages  a staff of 30+ to measure and monitor energy related costs, research and install renewable energy projects and promote long term sustainability; and working with the Green Committee to reduce NYCHAs carbon footprint.  By 2023, NYCHA plans to perform more than 2,500 energy audits, one audit per day.

NYCHA has begun 69 million dollars in capital improvements at 16 developments, which will result in repairs to roofs, boiler systems, bathrooms and other upgrades for more than 36,000 NYCHA residents over six months. The work is part of the NYCHAs Capital Plan and is funded by the federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) capital grants. Ongoing renovations to both the interior and exterior of NYCHA buildings and apartments are needed to keep them structurally sound and in a state of good repair.

“Despite a 35 percent drop in federal funding, NYCHA continues to spend its money wisely, on time- and in the best interests of residents," said NYCHA Chairman John B. Rhea. “Major upgrades are needed regularly to ensure that heating, plumbing, and other systems continue to function properly, especially since NYCHA buildings are aging structures – 70 percent of our buildings are more than 40 years old.”

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) recognizes the importance of private sector partners in providing housing and human services to more than 641,000 New Yorkers. To support operations, NYCHA purchases millions of dollars worth of goods and services annually from suppliers, contractors and consultants.

HAKS: Presenting Integrated Service - Urban, suburban and regional population centers exist and remain viable due to infrastructure.  It is the indispensable physical component that keeps them functional and efficient, covering everything from local streets and intersections to complex, multi-million dollar urban expressways and interchanges, simple span creek crossings to major suspension bridges, from water supply to sewers, electric power distribution and more.

With 13 offices, including an office in Chennai, India, HAKS is a multi-disciplined construction management, engineering, architecture, land surveying and material testing firm serving public and private clients.  HAKS offers a comprehensive range of industry related services in the infrastructure, transportation, buildings and facilities, environmental, utilities, security and asset management markets.

HAKS was awarded the 10.5 million dollar contract from PANYNJ for Special Inspections of World Trade Center Construction and Redevelopment Projects. This multi-billion dollar WTCC/WTCR project includes One World Trade Center, Transportation Hub, Vehicular Security Center, Retail Pre-Tenant Fit-Out, streets, utilities and related infrastructure, and parking infrastructure.

Notably, HAKS won the 2012 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Award for Concrete Re-Testing Program for Citywide Community Centers; its Manhattan Bridge Biennial Inspection; Protective Coating of Belt Shore Parkway Bridges; and the Diamond Award for New Croton Aqueduct Rehabilitation.

HAKS will speak to lessons learned post Sandy and Sustainable Infrastructure.

Capstone by RSP Systems: Presenting Technology  - Capstone is the world's leading producer of low-emission microturbine systems, and was first to market with commercially viable air bearing turbine technology. These award-winning systems have logged millions of documented runtime operating hours.

During Megastorm Sandy reliable Capstone MicroTurbines helped many vital facilities avoid rampant utility-power failures by producing non-stop power for venues including a data center serving the U.S. Department of Defense, a critical Red Cross shelter, a health care facility and a pair of Manhattan office buildings, among others. With news agencies reporting outages totaling over eight million electrical utility customers at peak, the Capstone microturbines played a role along the eastern seashore preventing power losses.

By integrating an aero-based turbine engine, a magnetic generator, advanced power electronics, and air bearing technology, Capstone MicroTurbines are a solution to today’s distributed generation needs.  MicroTurbines have just one moving part, no gearbox or other mechanicals, and use no lubricants or hazardous materials, resulting in minimal maintenance while providing reliable, dependable performance.

Capstone MicroTurbines can operate on a variety of gaseous or liquid fuels and emit very low emissions, making Capstone a clean, green, reliable source of energy. The MicroTurbines can be installed individually or multi-packed and can function in parallel or independent from the grid.   MicroTurbines are compact, lightweight, affordable, quiet and provide a robust and reliable solution to your energy needs.

Capstone is a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Combined Heat and Power Partnership which is committed to improving the efficiency of the nation's energy infrastructure and reducing emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases.

The Capstone by RSP Systems presentation will include the dynamics of the Capstone MicroTurbine and its benefit to the environment.
