Bravo, Powell River, for an incredible first year of PRISMA!

We are so fortunate to have been joined by world-class faculty members, hardworking students, committed volunteers, dedicated organizers and, of course, such enthusiastic and generous audiences. PRISMA is yet another tribute to Powell River's capabilities as the little town that could.

The concerts were magnificent, the masterclasses engaging and the student recitals inspiring. Fortunately, we can all experience this again next year!

It has been a pleasure writing these newsletters and I am so grateful to have become involved with PRISMA. The concerts I have seen were breathtaking and I cannot wait for more next year. I hope you have enjoyed reading and that this past season of the festival has you excited for PRISMA 2014.

In this final edition of the newsletter for this season, PRISMA thanks the donors, sponsors and partners who made the program a possibility. We wrap up the guest artist bios with the final four faculty members and include a short video clip of the highlights of this season.

GUEST ARTIST BIOS:

Herbert Greenberg

Herbert Greenberg's musical career began in his birthplace of Philadelphia and continued at Indiana State University.

Greenberg has been a member of the Minnesota Orchestra, Associate Concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony and, from 1981 to 2001, Concertmaster of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He was also the first American asked to serve as Concertmaster for Japan Virtuoso Symphony Orchestra. Greenberg has served as String Chair and is a member of the violin faculty at the prestigious Peabody Conservatory.

Greenberg has collaborated as a soloist with many of the leading conductors of the world. Many of his performances have been broadcasted on NPR and he was featured in Strauss's Ein Heldenleben on national television for the opening concert at Meyerhoff Hall in Baltimore.

Greenberg performs on the 1685 Jean Becker Stradivarius.

During the first week of PRISMA, Greenberg performed in the Faculty Chamber Music Concert on June 21.

Andrew Wan

One of the youngest leaders of a major symphony, Andrew Wan is Concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

Having received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music at The Juilliard School, he was the only violinist to be accepted into Juilliard's esteemed Artist Diploma Program in 2008.

Wan is also a winner of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award. Some of Wan's music releases, on the Onyx, Bridge and Naxos labels, have been nominated for Grammy and Juno awards.

He has appeared as a guest artist and faculty member at the St. Prex, Seattle Chamber, Edinburgh, Olympic, Agassiz, La Jolla, Aspen and Orford Music Festivals. Wan is currently on faculty at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University.

Wan performs on a 1744 Michel'Angelo Bergonzi violin on loan from the David Sela Foundation.

During the second week of PRISMA, Wan led a Strings Masterclass with fellow strings guest artists and performed in the Faculty Chamber Music Concert on June 26.

His first orchestral position was with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa. Since then, Beauchesne has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood Music Center and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Next Season
News Flash! PRISMA will be back for 2014 ... and so will our extraordinary violin soloist Soyoung Yoon. Maestro Arthur Arnold may have had to persuade Ms. Yoon to come to Powell River for this season but Powell River convinced her to return for 2014. Specifically, the excellent musical experience at PRISMA, our beautiful setting, the committed and talented faculty, the advanced students and, of course, the enthusiastic audiences inspired Ms. Yoon to participate in PRISMA again next year. We are, of course, pleased and delighted, but is Ms. Yoon excited to be returning? Judge that for yourself - she already has her airplane ticket to Powell River for June 2014.

Audiences and Students Give High Marks to PRISMA
95% of the audience members who filled out feedback forms judged the Chamber Music Concerts as "excellent." The Symphony Concerts received a 93% "excellent" rating. We know that you can't please everyone, but it is definitely gratifying that the remaining audience members thought the concerts worthy of a "very good" rating. We also received a number of constructive suggestions, such as improving the sound for the masterclasses and providing more information about the student musicians. We will use your feedback to make improvements and introduce new innovations for next year. We'd like to share some of the positive comments from the audience:

"PRISMA surpassed all expectations."
"My enjoyment was large, and I thank you ALL very much."
"It was wonderful to be able to attend the daily student recitals."
"A wonderful 2 weeks of music."
"PRISMA did everything just right."
"The violin soloist, Ms. Yoon, was absolutely outstanding - world class performance of the Tchaikovsky Concerto."
"Absolutely fabulous!! Kudos to Arthur Arnold, faculty and students. Soyoung Yoon was breathtaking. We are so lucky here in Powell River."
"Best year for the symphony in Powell River."
"Most inspiring ... such a human/artistic event."
"Excellent quality of concert performances - very polished. Complicated pieces were not avoided. So good to see such a high level of community support."
"Slowly coming down from two weeks of delight! Pathtique has been a favourite since my twenties; I've never heard it live before. What a gift! Thank you!!!"
"Thank you so much to EVERYONE for bringing us such a wonderful program."

The audience loved the addition of the masterclasses to the program this year. The excitement grew day-by-day just from word of mouth. The last masterclasses drew over 150 people apiece to observe the students play, learn and improve before our very eyes. Your comments tell the story:

"The masterclasses opened my eyes and ears to the many facets of playing the instruments and interpreting the written score. They have given me a much greater appreciation of the music, instruments and musicians."
"I am a dummy when it comes to classical composers ... the masterclasses helped increase my knowledge."
"The masterclasses were a great addition to the program."
"Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of the amazing musical journeys during the festival, and especially for opening up masterclasses to the public. I learned so much from watching the faculty members work with students! Thank you for sharing so much with us!"

Powell River is grateful for the student musicians who work hard to perform at a high, professional level during the concerts at the same time as they are working to improve their skills. It's nice to know that the students appreciate Powell River and PRISMA, too. Here are a few representative comments:

"The musical experience was amazing. I have never played in such a good orchestra before. In addition to the music, the social experience was also good. I enjoyed meeting fellow students from around the world."
"I have loved it so much here! It has changed my life for the better and I'm so sad to be going home."
"A memorable PRISMA moment for me was playing outside (in the rain) at Willingdon Beach."
"I had a great learning experience. Great section. Great instructors ... What more could you ask for?"
"All faculty excellent - so wise and willing to give help and info."
"PRISMA was great. I learned a lot, met awesome musicians and just had an incredible experience."
"I loved every minute."

We're excited to relive this PRISMA experience in an even better way with you next season!
