Windows on the World: Fifty Writers, Fifty Views by Matteo Pericoli. This is a very cool concept and a wonderful perceptual journey for the right person. Architect and artist Pericoli explores the idea of staring out the window, searching for inspiration, by pairing his own line drawings with short essays from 50 writers - mostly international, some better known than others - musing about the view from their window.

Here's a drawing from the book, as well as the first paragraph of the essay that Orhan Pamuk wrote to go along with the view outside his window in Istanbul, Turkey.

"Most of my writing time is spent forming the next sentence in my imagination. When my mind is busy with words, all by itself my eye moves away from the page and the tip of the fountain pen. This is the landscape I have gazed upon through my Istanbul window for the last fifteen years. On the left side is Asia and in the middle the Bosphorus and its opening to the Sea of Marmara, as well as the islands I have been going to each summer for fifty-eight years. To the right is the entrance to the Golden Horn and the part of the city that Istanbul residents refer to as the Old Town, home of the Ottoman dynasty for four centuries, including Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, and the Blue Mosque."

Cute Last-Minute Gifts for Dog Lovers

Really Important Stuff My Dog Has Taught Me by Cynthia Copeland. This is a cute, funny book that pairs photographs of cute, funny dogs with simple words of wisdom. For example, a photo of  playful spaniels completely covered with snow is accompanied by the sentiment "There's no such thing as 'bad' weather." Or the bulldog who's headfirst in her bowl with the caption "Every meal is THE BEST MEAL EVER." Copeland's lifelong love of dogs is evident, and her messages, while simple, are universal.

Here's a sample spread from the book:

Underwater Puppies by Seth Casteel. Call it puppy love - this sequel to 2012's Underwater Dogs gives readers another look at swimming canines. Photographer Casteel's follow-up focuses on pups, who may be even more playful and exuberant than their adult counterparts. The vibrant and colorful underwater images show off the range of emotions of puppies, irresistible to the very last paddle. And if you wonder how Casteel gets his shots, take a look at this video:

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
My name is Hut Landon. I'm a former bookstore owner who now runs the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association (NCIBA) in San Francisco.

My goal with this newsletter is to keep readers up to date about new books hitting the shelves, share what booksellers are recommending in their stores, and pass on occasional news about the book world.

I'm not into long, wordy reviews or literary criticism; I'd like HUT'S PLACE to be a quick, fun read for book buyers. If you have any friends who you think might like receiving this column each week, simply click on "Forward this email" below and enter their email address. There is also a box in which to add a short message.
