City of Westland to Treat More than 11,000 Catch Basins and Ditches for Mosquitos

Westland, MI - Mayor William R. Wild is pleased to announce that the City of Westland will begin their annual Mosquito Abatement Program on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.  The Department of Public Service will apply Vectolex Water Soluble Pouches and Bactomos Briquettes to over 11,000 catch basins and ditches that have been identified as possible mosquito breeding grounds.

The City of Westland began the Mosquito Abatement Program began in 2003 and the catch basins and ditches have been treated annually in an effort to protect residents against the West Nile Virus.

Mosquitos are at their peek breeding season and residents are encouraged to take precautions due to the illnesses that can arise from being bitten, including wearing long sleeves and pants, avoid being outside at dusk and applying DEET-based insect repellent.

"The City of Westland is committed to the health and safety of our residents," stated Mayor Wild.  "Summer is short here in Michigan and we want our residents to be able to enjoy their backyards and all of the parks here in our All American City with all of their great amenities."

Residents also have the option to purchase the Vectolex Water Soluble Pouches and Bactomos Briquettes from the Department of Public Service, located at 37137  Marquette.
