Captain's Message: It's good to be home!

Costa Rica is a great place to spend the winter, but there is no better place than spring in North Carolina. Shad are in the rivers, trout survived the winter, lots of red drum and the stripers are just about to explode. Assuming the cobia and tarpon show up on time, all is shaping up to be a great year of fishing in North Carolina.

Many of the Down East Guides who you may be used to hearing about are already booked. In this newsletter is a list of their last open dates. Don't Panic! Over the past couple of years Down East has been working with several great guides who we feel confident will give you the quality fishing experience that you demand! Tell us what you want to catch, how you want to catch them and where you want to do it and we'll put you with the best available guide for your kind of action.

Also in this newsletter is a Costa Rica Recap that highlights ANOTHER tournament win for the Dragin Fly in Costa Rica, an Amazon Update and please note that we are looking For 2 to join us in Argentina.

Dragin Fly Wins Los Suenos Signature Billfish Series

After a convincing win of the first leg of the Los Suenos Signature Billfish Series in January, it would have been heartbreaking  to lose the series championship in the second leg, but that's what almost happened.

After the first day of fishing we were lamenting lost opportunities, catching only 8 of our 20 good bites and sitting in 17th place, watching our 10 sailfish lead of the series get whittled down to 8 sails. On Day 2, Capt. James started us in the action and we landed 15 of 20 sails and moved up to 4th place. It all came down to the last day of fishing. With other boats hooking up around us it was disheartening to watch our series lead get knocked down to only 4 sailfish. Finally we got started with a double header, then another...all said 15 sailfish releases out of 20 bites for the day.   Only 5 sails out of the money, but good enough to win the series title with a total of 100 sailfish and 1 marlin in 6 days of competition.

I am determined not to get "rusty" before next tournament season. Although I will be cobia fishing in May during the Papagayo Presidential Challenge, I plan on hosting a couple of trips to Costa Rica in late June/early July before heading to Argentina for duck season.

Amazon Peacock Bass Trip Update:

The timing for my 1st trip to the Amazon is not going to work out for me this year, but there is still an opportunity if YOU want to go. Through research and reports from some folks who have recently been on this trip, I am confident that the outfitter we are using is running a professional operation. Throwing big top water baits in the tropics is a lot of work, but if you're looking for trophy peacock bass, it's worth the reward. Fishing is done out of skiffs and the nights are spent on the "mothership" moving to different parts of the river for the best fishing.   This week long trip is $4600/person.
