Four Huber Heights Students Featured in Montgomery County Calendar

The Montgomery County Environmental Learning Center educates the public on green initiatives in our region. Each year Montgomery County sponsors an Environmental Calendar contest. This year Huber Heights has four pictures in the calendar, including two from Wayne High School sophomores Elijah Dugger (December) and Josie Zamora (September). Briece Graham from Wright Brothers Elementary and Abigail Kerestes from Weisenborn Junior High are also represented. They deserve a big thank you for representing our district in such a positive way and for spreading an important message through their art work!

Wayne High School
Three Wayne Students Honored for Achieving Their Goals

Wayne High School celebrated with three members of the Wayne family as they made major decisions that will have a positive impact on the rest of their lives. Ahmad Wagner signed to attend the University of Iowa and Xeyrius Williams signed to attend the University of Dayton. Both students will be on basketball scholarships. These two young men are truly student athletes, and we are extremely proud of their accomplishments. Mathew Wilkinson was also recently honored when he was sworn in as an Air National Guard member. The AFROTC students watched as Lt. Col. Roger  Redwood swore him into service for our country. By joining the Air National Guard, Matt is accomplishing a goal he set when he was in college.

Recognition Programs Highlight Student Achievements, Citizenship

At Weisenborn, students are recognized in numerous ways for their achievements, including through the Hard Work Cafe and the Random Act of Kindness program.

The Hard Work Cafe recognizes students who have shown improvement in grades and/or effort, submitted outstanding reports or projects, demonstrated improvement in behavior, or exemplified positive conduct (such as respect, kindness, and positive decision-making)
. At the end of the month, the staff lounge is transformed into a student-centered VIP room to honor these students, and recipients' names are displayed on a bulletin board for the month!

Random Act of Kindness is a citizenship recognition program that recognizes students for doing a random act of kindness or demonstrating effective positive citizenship. Students are recognized over the PA system, spend one-on-one time with Principal Williams, and earn a spot on a bulletin board display!

Free Program Educates Students About Digital Citizenship

On November 12, members of the Digital Innocence Recovery Group (DIRG) gave a presentation to all Weisenborn students on cyberbullying, sexting, and digital footprints. DIRG is a group of law enforcement and education professionals that has spoken to more than 40,000 students, 4,000 professionals, and 3,000 parents all over Ohio. Their services are provided free of charge to public and private schools and parent organizations. If you would like additional information about DIRG, please visit their website at www.digitaldanger.org.

Fall Sports Accolades for Weisenborn

It was a great season for fall sports at Weisenborn! The eighth grade football team earned first place in the GWOC, the eighth grade girls volleyball team earned second place in the GWOC, and Lucas Houk placed first out of all the runners in the north and was second overall in the entire GWOC, which was more than 250 runners. Please join us in congratulating these student athletes for their exceptional achievements on the field and in the classroom!

Valley Forge Elementary
Warrior Volunteers Help Students Build Their Academic Skills

Valley Forge Elementary has many community volunteers who assist students and teachers in the classroom. These special volunteers--which include Valley Forge parents, grandparents, retired staff, and business leaders--come from all areas of the community to help enrich students by tutoring in math and reading, helping with art projects, serving as club advisors, helping with recess and lunch supervision, and mentoring. Our Warrior Volunteers are having a tremendous impact by helping our students increase their academic skills and by serving as positive role models. Says Valley Forge Principal Mr. Sussman: "We really appreciate the time that they give to us to help our students. Most importantly, the kids love it when their Warrior Volunteer comes to work with them."

To become a Warrior Volunteer, contact Mr. Sussman at (937) 237-6380.

Charles H. Huber Elementary
Pumpkin Carving Activity Combines Social Studies and Art Skills

Collaboration, teamwork, and a bit of artistry were in the mix when Mrs. Riley's third grade classroom carved the continents into pumpkins during social studies class. The students worked in small groups to draw and cut out their continents, turning their ordinary pumpkins into a memorable activity on geography!

Charles Huber hosts Wayne High Pep Rally

District school spirit was the theme to a recent pep rally for the Wayne football team. The WHS Warrior Mascot visited with students, including the kindergartners pictured below. Charles Huber students brought the team great luck, as they went on to win their football game the next day!

Annual Halloween Parade Celebrates Our Students

We were fortunate to have a beautiful day for the annual Halloween Parade! K-5 students and teachers paraded around the building in their Halloween costumes prior to their classroom parties. A great turnout of parents, grandparents, neighbors, younger siblings, and sixth graders viewed the parade.

Monticello Elementary
Monticello events welcome families to share time with students

The staff of Monticello Elementary loves welcoming students and their families to special events throughout the year. Two of the most popular events include "Goodies with Grandparents," which was held in October, and "Munchies with Moms," which took place in November. The Monticello PTO provided donuts, juice, milk, and coffee for students and their families at both events, and Monticello staff members were on hand to serve the food and drinks. Monticello looks forward to hosting dads in the future during their annual "Donuts with Dads" breakfast.

Rushmore Elementary
Students Honor Veterans During Veterans Day Event

Rushmore students and staff honored veteran family members, the commander of the VFW Post 3283 Arthur Hanson, and speaker Officer Nick Lambert during a Veterans Day program on November 11. Fourth grade Student Council members led the student body in the Pledge of Allegiance while the Wayne ROTC presented colors. Sixth grade chorus members sang "We Honor Those Who Served." First grade students created a Wall of Honor with names and photos of family members who are veterans, and all grades presented letters to veterans who attended. Teachers and staff with family who are veterans were also highlighted. Officer Lambert, who works through the Huber Heights Police Department with the Huber Heights City Schools, also served in the Air Force as an engineer during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Wright Brothers Elementary
Wright Brothers Elementary Welcomes Families in for Doughnuts with Dad

On November 5, Wright Brothers Elementary hosted "Donuts with Dad." Sponsored by the Wright Brothers PTO, more than 350 parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, and sisters were served donuts, juice, and milk. The students then took their "dads" around to show off their rooms and the building. A wonderful time was had by all. The staff at Wright Brothers love having families come and see what a great place Wright Brothers Elementary School is is to be. Thanks to all of our students, staff, PTO, and families who made all of this fun possible!

Integrated Preschool
Grandparents go Back to School for Grandparents Day

Earlier this year, the Integrated Preschool at Studebaker Elementary hosted an interactive Grandparents Day. More than 100 grandparents attended the event, rotating from classroom to classroom to participate in a variety of activities along with their preschooler. One group manipulated play dough to express creativity and develop fine motor skills. Another classroom offered language and literacy using music. A third classroom engaged the participants in large body movement using music. In the fourth area, participants were provided a snack.

Our next Parent Engagement activity will be a bowling outing in January. We look forward to another great turn-out!
