Our Second Brain
Contribution by our Awesome Treasurer: Sue Cozzens.

We work with two brains. One is located between our ears and the other is located in our gut. "Scientists recognize the web of neurons lining the gastrointestinal tract as an independent brain, and a new field of medicine called neurogastroenterology has been created to study it". Philip Shepherd in New Self, New World.

Using the above information I am exploring "gut breathing" exercises while incorporating self-massage and body awareness. I notice the relaxation of the brain between my ears and experience the consciousness of my second brain. My "gut brain" views life differently and can bring me a greater range of options than the brain between my ears. As a massage practitioner this helps me understand stress in a much larger way and gives me another way to discuss it with clients.

The Healthy and Delicious: Cucurbita
Why Squash is Amazing

Winter squash suffers from the overabundance hypothesis.  For a plant that can create so many fruiting bodies it is often difficult to figure out how to turn this bounty into an accessible meal.  Don't be scared away by challenges, rise to them.

Low in fat, butternut squash delivers an ample dose of dietary fiber, making it an exceptionally heart-friendly choice. It provides significant amounts of potassium, important for bone health, and vitamin B6, essential for the proper functioning of both the nervous and immune systems. The folate content adds yet another boost to its heart-healthy reputation.

Squash's tangerine hue, however, indicates butternut's most noteworthy health perk. The color signals an abundance of powerhouse nutrients known as carotenoids, shown to protect against heart disease. In particular, the gourd boasts very high levels of beta-carotene (which your body automatically converts to vitamin A), identified as a deterrent against breast cancer and age-related macular degeneration, as well as a supporter of healthy lung development in fetuses and newborns. What's more, with only a 1-cup serving, you get nearly half the recommended daily dose of antioxidant-rich vitamin C.

Here's a great starter for the holidays:

Looking for a Good Read?
Worms, Autoimmune Disorders, and Allergies.

It got cold finally, here in MT, which means that ativities that don't involve several layers of clothing are severely limited.  There is a bright side however: reading, preferably by a fireplace or cozied up next to a loved one or a favorite pet, has just gotten much more popular.  During the beginning of the marathon of eating that Americans refer to as the Holiday Season, what better read than one about the importance of intestinal parasites.  No Really!  It makes a lot of sense.  Something we have been fighting for years, kind of like the whole "all germs are bad" debacle, is now the root cause and possible solution of some really terrible illnesses.  Amazing Read and He's on TEDx as well.  My hero.
