FEATURED SCHOOLS: McKinney and Free Orchards
Hillsboro Schools Foundation Grant Ignites McKinney and Free Orchard Readers

Last spring, teacher Kim Harrington submitted a grant to the Hillsboro Schools Foundation titled "Using Graphic Novels to Support Reluctant Readers." Her request included $4,500 for new graphic novel collections for McKinney and Free Orchards Elementary Schools and $2,000 for "lunch bunch" book clubs at the schools. Hers was one of fifteen grants selected to receive funding for the 2014-15 school year and the novels finally arrived last week-much to the delight of students!

PARENT CONFERENCES AND NO SCHOOL DAYS

Parent conferences continue this week at all grade levels.  Parents are highly encouraged to participate in conferences at their child's school to learn about what's going well, what could be improved, and what supports might be needed to ensure success throughout the remainder of the school year. HILHI COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK WAS A SUCCESS!
100 percent of Mrs. Glaze's senior language arts students have completed applications

College Application Week November 4-12, opened doors for the 105 students in Mrs. Glaze's senior language arts classes and inspired them to commit to post-secondary education or military service. Students worked hard on their applications, essays and letters of recommendation, with supportive counseling and college staff providing guidance. These students' prospects for the future are now filled with hope and dreams.

THANK YOU, DONORS!
Collections abundant for Community Warehouse

In our November 10 issue of Hot News, we encouraged people to support those transitioning from homelessness back into stable housing by donating household items to the Portland-based non-profit organization Community Warehouse. The response has been amazing! Community Warehouse staff member Rena wrote the following in an e-mail on November 20: "The quality of goods [donated] was excellent, and you helped us fill our shelves with quite a few of our most-needed items. Will you pass along our thanks and high fives to your team?  We have 8 families scheduled today and 11 tomorrow, so your goods will be very helpful in getting them everything they need." Thank you to all who participated!
