Ward 9 Councillor's Report November 2014 - Vol 14

Dear Neighbour:

Welcome to the November edition of the Ward 9 e-newsletter. Now that the municipal elections are over, I am able to resume sending my e-newsletters.

I want to thank the Ward 9 residents for supporting me in the elections and returning me as your Councillor. Thank you for placing your trust in me and I pledge to honour my commitments to you and our community.

As we move forward, we have new challenges that Council will face at the City and Region but we also have new opportunities that I am looking forward to pursuing.

Watch for next months' e-newsletter where I will be asking for your input into some of our budget decisions for 2015.  Your input is invaluable and I want to keep you both informed and involved.

As always, my staff and I are here to help you with any City or Regional issues.  Just send me an email to pat.saito@mississauga.ca or call 905-896-5900.

Sincerely,

Open House for Village of Erin Meadows Phase 2 Site Plan

I am holding an Open House on Wednesday November 26 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Village of Erin Meadows, 2930 Erin Centre Blvd. to show the new revised site plan for Phase Two of the seniors' complex.

Phase One was built in 2003 and at the same time, the zoning was put in place for the entire project that would include the Long Term Care building, a central linking internal "town square" and a 7 storey seniors' apartment building with a total of 236 additional units.

Due to shadowing concerns raised by City planning staff, there is a need to reduce the height of the building on the east side of the property.  In order to do this and still provide the number of seniors' apartments needed in the community, the applicant is proposing a 12 storey building on the west side of the property stepping down to 3 storeys along the east boundary with a total of 267 units. Please click here to view the plans.

As this plan is different from the one I showed at my Open House in 2013, I encourage you to attend to view the new proposed plans and provide your comments.  This is an exciting project as it will provide much needed seniors accommodation in our community.

Ward 9 News
Vandalism
Vandalism in our Parks

It is always very disturbing when our property is defaced with graffiti or other forms of vandalism.  I am so grateful to a number of wonderful residents who report every bit of graffiti they see on their daily walks so we have been able to clean it up quickly.

Recently a resident reported to me that there was vandalism done to the murals at Lake Aquitaine Park and the Lake Wabukayne underpass.

My office was able to quickly send a request to City staff to clean up the graffiti at the Wabukayne underpass and report to me what had happened at Lake Aquitaine.

Parks staff first reported to me that the mural at Lake Aquitaine had been removed to protect it during the Meadowvale Community Centre construction but later confirmed that the mural had in fact been ripped off the walls and some panels tossed into the lake.  They managed to retrieve two of the original boards but sadly the mural is not salvageable.

This was a very special part of our community's history as it was painted by the students of Meadowvale Secondary School to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Meadowvale Community in 2010 and I am deeply saddened that the work has been destroyed.  The lack of respect for public property is very disturbing.  We work hard to involve our young people in the community and they were so proud of this wonderful artwork that residents have been enjoying for the past 4 years.  Hopefully we will be able to replace it in 2015 and get the school involved again.

We all have a role to play in preventing this type of destruction so please remember if you are out walking  and see graffiti , vandalism or litter in any park or city facility, please take the time to report it to the 24 Hour Facility Watch Hot Line at 905-615-4060.

Coyotes

Dealing with Wildlife

There have been several media reports concerning Coyotes in Mississauga and I want to provide residents with some information on how to deal with this wildlife.

Coyotes have been in our community and in some of our parks for many years and the City's Animal Services staff have provided residents with tips on what to do if you encounter this wildlife and how to protect your pets.

As the recent incidents appear to be unusual behaviour, Coyote Watch, a National organization is working with staff in the GTA to determine the cause for the behaviours.

Our City Animal Services staff are taking the following steps:

  • sending educational material to area residents, beginning where the October 27th and November 7th incidents occurred;
  • hosting local information sessions;
  • hosting a city-wide information session;
  • continuing to dialogue with the Ministry of Natural Resources for support and assistance;
  • meeting with Coyote Watch, a non-profit stakeholder group that has consulted with a number of Ontario municipalities on urban coyotes, to understand their perspective, to share information and to learn if there are any new measures the City could take;
  • continuing daily outreach though our animal services officers; and,
  • continuing to use social media for awareness.

 Wildlife such as coyotes, foxes and raccoons are in most cities and there have been sightings in our community for many years. Coyotes are an important part of our ecosystem as they control rodent and rabbit populations.  According to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, they flourish in cities across Canada and they are here to stay.

The removal of wildlife is governed by the Provincial Government's Ministry of Natural Resources.  Mississauga's Animal Services is not responsible for managing or trapping wildlife but rather handles domestic animals like cats and dogs. While our staff cannot remove the wildlife, they will advise residents on what they can do.

Residents with wildlife on their property may wish to enlist the help of a professional wildlife removal service. These are also governed by provincial regulations which states that any one trapping and removing wildlife must release them within one kilometre of the capture site. By law, the animal must be released close to where it was found, this means there is a greater chance it will return to the original location. Trapping therefore is not an effective method of wildlife control. It is often used as a "band-aid" solution and only temporarily deals with the problem.

Animal Services will continue to monitor and we encourage residents to keep pets on leash, to report coyote sightings and to not feed coyotes.

They will continue to monitor reports and take any further action that may be required.

Please call 311 to report any wildlife sightings.

Animal Services staff urges residents to employ deterrent methods which can be found here
