In less than a month, PortSide received a White House award for our Sandy recovery work, had our Founder and Director Carolina Salguero receive a National Maritime Historical Society (NMHS) award, and we were able to open the tanker MARY A. WHALEN to the public for her 75th birthday!

What's in a name? Hello, MARY!

The MARY A. WHALEN's 75th birthday and our new website are the occasion to introduce the new way we will now refer to the tanker.
We had been calling her "the Whalen" for short because that was the first thing Carolina Salguero heard her called back in 2001.
However, over the years, we have heard all former crew members call her "the MARY," and so from now all, so shall we. That should also solve the frequent spelling confusion between Whalen and Whelan!

Looking ahead to next school year
In the expectation that we will be publicly accessible at our prospective home GBX-Gowanus Bay Terminal during next school year, we are forming a working group to help create school and after-school programs. Get in touch if you would like to be involved!

We also tested a "dock-builder math" program during a visit by the City & Country School to the tanker. Topics include calculating tide heights, and for older students, displacement.

Carolina Salguero participated in the Red Hook & Carroll Gardens Studio Tours and has a closing party for her exhibit on Wed 6/26 6-8pm. Come join!
Her photographs are at Margaret Palca Bakes at 191 Columbia Street, near Degraw Street, Brooklyn, 11231. Images include the first-ever prints of her series of porthole views from the MARY A. WHALEN, as well as older, evocative images of the working waterfront.

Now is a great time to donate! We have growing momentum, having just received a White House and preservation award. Our ship has reached the significant age of 75, and is about to become the last of her kind in the USA with the imminent scrapping of the last other coastal tanker JOHN B. CADDELL which was ravaged by hurricane Sandy.
