MARY A. WHALEN & our Director receive attention!

What a whirlwind!

In less than a month, PortSide received a White House award for our Sandy recovery work, had our Founder and Director Carolina Salguero receive a National Maritime Historical Society (NMHS) award, and we were able to open the tanker MARY A. WHALEN to the public for her 75th birthday!

Check out the colorful guests who came to the tanker's party on our blog.

What's in a name?  Hello, MARY!

Thanks to Bobby Silva for finding this photo in Maine for us

The MARY A. WHALEN's 75th birthday and our new website are the occasion to introduce the new way we will now refer to the tanker.

We had been calling her "the Whalen" for short because that was the first thing Carolina Salguero heard her called back in 2001.

However, over the years, we have heard all former crew members call her "the MARY," and so from now all, so shall we. That should also solve the frequent spelling confusion between Whalen and Whelan!

Teachers and parents get in touch - programs to plan

Looking ahead to next school year

In the expectation that we will be publicly accessible at our prospective home  GBX-Gowanus Bay Terminal during next school year, we are forming a working group to help create school and after-school programs. Get in touch if you would like to be involved!

Our simple Simple Machine machine @ PS29 For example, inspired by invitation from PS 29 in Cobble Hill to bring an exhibit to their "Super Science Saturday," we created a exhibit to explain

simple machines" using a maritime context. See it in action here!

We also tested a "dock-builder math" program during a visit by the City & Country School to the tanker. Topics include calculating tide heights, and for older students, displacement.

Chiclet in porthole + NSCSA ship

Carolina Salguero participated in the Red Hook & Carroll Gardens Studio Tours and has a closing party for her exhibit on Wed 6/26 6-8pm. Come join!

Her photographs are at Margaret Palca Bakes at 191 Columbia Street, near Degraw Street, Brooklyn, 11231.  Images include the first-ever prints of her series of porthole views from the MARY A. WHALEN, as well as older, evocative images of the working waterfront.

Media Update

Our endeavors continue to attract media attention

The 75th birthday party of the MARY A. WHALEN brought out the press -- even though we never sent out a press release!

Marine link plugged the event in advance

New York Observer captured the spirit of the party in our first story in that paper

Brooklyn Paper had its eye on PortSide's prospective future at GBX-Gowanus Bay Terminal

Help us continue and grow what we do

We are planning some fundraising events with dates to be announced next newsletter. Get in touch if you would like to be on the fundraising committee

Now is a great time to donate!  We have growing momentum, having just received a White House and preservation award. Our ship has reached the significant age of 75, and is about to become the last of her kind in the USA with the imminent scrapping of the last other coastal tanker JOHN B. CADDELL which was ravaged by hurricane Sandy.

Donations now will propel us strongly into our prospective new home.
