Today is Children's Grief Awareness Day

Holding On To HOPE

When someone we love dies, it hurts, sometimes more than we ever thought it could hurt. Although it can seem as if the intense pain will never go away, it can ease over time. Grief lasts a lifetime-we will miss them forever-but there is hope.

In those times that it hurts the most, we can hold on to the hope that "it won't always hurt so bad."

HOPE the Butterfly

HOPE the Butterfly was created to spread this message of hope to grieving children across the world. No one can just take away a child's grief. No one can bring back the person who has died. But we can show grieving children that they're not alone. We can show them we care. We can show them we're there for them. Grieving children can hold on to our support, our care. Grieving children can hold on to hope.

How you can help

Here's one way you can help-you can hold on to HOPE and show grieving children "I care and I am here."

Print out HOPE the Butterfly and let people know why you are holding on to HOPE by writing (or drawing) the reason right on the printed page itself.

After writing (or drawing) your message, have a picture taken of you and HOPE and share your picture online with grieving kids throughout the world. Let these kids see that it's possible to Hold On To HOPE.

The goal is to have as many pictures of as many different people in as many different places as possible "Holding On To HOPE" as a message to grieving children everywhere that they are not alone. Please add your voice-and your photo-to this message of HOPE. And you can continue to spread HOPE beyond that. Pass it on-share HOPE with your friends and family by sending HOPE to them as well. You can send HOPE either electronically or in a paper version, whatever is easier for you. Let them know what "Holding On To HOPE" is all about.

To pass HOPE on electronically, share HOPE the Butterfly through email, Facebook, Twitter or any other place you connect with friends. The more people who know about HOPE, the more HOPE can find its way into the lives of grieving children.

Instructions for Sharing HOPE

You can share HOPE with grieving children from around the world-and right in your own neighborhood-by sharing a photo of you and HOPE and using #CGADHOPE. We want everyone to share why Children's Grief Awareness Day is important to them. Take a photo, share it, and let others know why this cause is important to you.

  • Take a photo of you holding on to HOPE. Write a message In memory of..., In honor of..., In support of..., From..., or any other message that you want to share.
  • Share the image on your social networks-Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or wherever you are. Use #CGADHOPE. Or post it to the Children's Grief Awareness Day Facebook page or email your photos to [email protected].
  • The photos submitted will be added to HOPE's Facebook page where you can see all the photos that have been posted in support of grieving children.

The Children's Grief Awareness Day logo and the image of HOPE the Butterfly (in connection with the Holding On To HOPE campaign) were developed by the Highmark Caring Place.

The Caring Place encourages any organization or individual to use the Children's Grief Awareness Day logo for any activity related to Children's Grief Awareness Day. The HOPE image can be used in conjunction with Children's Grief Awareness Day as well as for any activity, event, or personal message of "hope" for a grieving person or family.

The 14th Annual Survivors of Homicide Victims Awareness Month.  Enacted in 2000, Survivors of Homicide Victims Awareness Month (SHVAM) is an annual observance for survivor of homicide victims held November 20th - December 20th.

During the awareness month, survivors are provided with many opportunities to honor the memories of the loved ones, reflect on their journey as survivors of homicide victims, connect with other survivors and needed services, learn more about the Massachusetts Victim's Rights Movement and ways they can get involved, as well as support the efforts of survivors and inform the public about violence prevention, peacemaking, trauma, crisis response protocols and the restorative and social justice movement. Massachusetts was the first state in the country to dedicate an entire month to survivors of homicide victims.

How you can get involved in SHVAM.

Spread the word! Talk about SHVAM with your friends and colleagues, and encourage them to support and promote the initiative, post info on social media sites. You can let us know what you are doing to assist families in the aftermath of a murder.

Show your support!

Change your profile banner on facebook to the graphic above, or your profile banner to the SHVAM logo. Post on facebook and twitter #SHVAM #peaceispossible

Women Survivors of Homicide Occupy the Boston Police Headquarters

1:00 - 4:00 pm

Location: Boston Police Department, 1 Schroeder Plaza, Boston, MA, United States

Description: On June 23rd and September 9th the Women Survivors of Homicide Movement (WSOH) met with Commissioner Evans and Superintendent Robert Merner. We were promised a room and told we would be allowed to personalize it for meetings with advocates and homicide detectives. Presently meetings are held in an extremely small interrogation room where murder suspects are interviewed and a camera is mounted on the ceiling. On October 28, 2014, the Boston Police Department invited our organization to view a room only to be told that it was no longer available. We consider this a major setback in fostering a working relationship between law enforcement and the community. This situation has left us no choice, but to occupy the Boston Police Headquarters every day until the original agreement is honored. Occupy the Boston Police Headquarters with us!
