SPECIAL EVENT!!
Adopt-A-Book is HERE!!
Beginning Monday, November 17
It's that time of year again!
Adopt-A-Book is the library's annual fundraiser to help build the book collection. An assortment of new adult fiction/non-fiction, young adult, and children's releases will be on display for patrons to "adopt" (purchase) for the library. A commemorative book plate will be placed in the book and the adopting patron can be the first to check the book out of the library.
Adopt-A-Book is also the perfect gift for any holiday or occasion. The library will provide a lovely card that you can send to your family members or friends so they will know about the gift given in their name. Also a commemorative book plate will be inscribed with their name and added to the book.

SPECIAL INVITATION
PUBLIC LIBRARY OF NEW LONDON TO HOST DEDICATION CEREMONY FOR USSTHRESHER MEMORIAL November 29 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm the Public Library of New London hosts the dedication of a memorial in honor of the crew of the USS Thresher, lost at sea with 129 crew members on April 10,1963. Family members of the lost crew are invited as special, honored guests.
Please join Congressman Joe Courtney, Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio, Councilman Michael Passero, Command Masterchief Gladu from the Naval Submarine Base,
as well as members from the U.S, Submarine Veterans Inc., Groton Base and the Thresher Base in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and the William Meredith Foundation.
The New London High School JROTC color guard will open the ceremony. Light refreshments will be served. This event is particularly appropriate in a month remembering veterans who keep us safe and guard our freedom. Free and open to the public. The Thresher memorial features three commissioned etchings by renowned artist, Stoimen Stoilov, in addition to William Meredith's masterpiece poem, The Wreck of the Thresher. The memorial is located temporarily at the Public Library of New London until the scheduled refurbishment of City Hall has been completed. The New London City Council voted unanimously to work with the William Meredith Foundation, the Disabled American Veterans and other community sponsors to establish this memorial in City Hall. Though initiated by the City Council, the memorial has been totally funded by foundation sponsorship and private donations. On April 10, 1963, the Thresher sank about 220 miles east of Boston after leaving Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for deep-diving tests. All 129 men on board died - 16 officers, 96 enlisted men and 17 civilian technicians. Among the 129 men were residents of New London, Groton, Norwich, Gales Ferry, Mystic, Uncasville and Jewett City. Heads of state from around the world sent messages of condolence to America for this tragic loss.
Please join us to remember the men who gave their lives that fateful day in the spring of 1963, an important moment in the life and times of our community.
