Notes from Sunday's Sermon
"YOUR PRESENT PAST" (Genesis 29:15-30):
We should understand that the same love that produces our blessing also produces our chastisement. In fact let me tell you something. Those of you whom God never lets up on-you're the ones who need to be shouting the most. Not because God is so hard on you, but because God loves you so much that God doesn't want you walking around with a split spiritual personality.
Watch this in the text. Where do we see today the justice of God veiled in grace? Jacob has deceived his father and hurt his brother. He deserves to have the full weight of that come down upon his life. So, while Jacob has survived, Laban is putting the deceptive vice grip on Jacob now. Player is getting played. But the grace of God is this: God could have left Jacob with Leah and let that be it. Every day God could have had Jacob sit at Leah's table, married to Leah and looking across that table at Rachel. That would have been what Jacob deserved. That would have been just desserts for a player who got played.
But God tempers his judgment in Jacob's life with grace. God exacts the punishment through Laban's deceit, and then gives Jacob grace by allowing him to have who he wanted in the first place-Rachel.
Sincerely in Christ,
Pastor Stephen King

A Mission-Driven Church
Our Mission...
The Memorial Tabernacle Church has come together by the Holy Spirit for the specific purpose of preaching and teaching the word of God, (the Bible), and about Jesus Christ, God's son, and to proclaim the gospel of the Kingdom of God to the North Oakland Community and its environs; to bring healing to the brokenhearted and deliverance to the oppressed.
Our Foundation...
"And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more, as you see the day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:24-25)
"Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God."
(Philippians 4:6)
" Let us therefore, receiving a kingdom that is firm and stable and cannot be shaken, offer to God pleasing service and acceptable worship, with modesty and pious care and godly fear and awe."
(Hebrews 12: 28)
