Dana Point Elects Three New Councilmembers
Excerpt from Dana Point Times

Dana Point voters have chosen three newcomers to local politics to fill the three open seats on City Council.

Attorney and Marine Corps Reserve Lt. Col. Richard Viczorek and property management business owners John Tomlinson and Joe Muller were the top three vote-getters out of nine-incumbent candidates vying for three openings on the council.

They will join Councilmen Carlos N. Olvera and Scott Schoeffel, who each have two years left on their terms.

The three open seats are being vacated by Mayor Lisa Bartlett, who was just elected to the Fifth District seat on the Orange County Board of Supervisors; Councilman Bill Brough, who has been elected to the California Assembly 73rd District seat and Mayor Pro Tem Steven Weinberg, who is terming out.

Member Spotlight: Hope 4 Kids
It's hard to imagine that there are thousands of children from babies to teens who have been abused, abandoned, and neglected in our own communities. Many of these children have gone without food, shelter, and clothing; and most do not have a family to call their own. Luckily, organizations like our member Hope 4 Kids exist to help place these children in loving supportive homes and find them their forever families. Read on to learn more about this wonderful organization, based right here in Dana Point.

Can you please tell us a brief history of your business?
Len and Peggy Carey co-founded Hope 4 Kids in 1995, the same year they were married on the lawn at the Dana Point Resort. After years of working with groups where policies prohibited significant change in children and families, Len and Peggy decided to start an agency with a vision for a better world. They purposed to correct policies that limited their ability to affect real change, and to create programs more consistent with their vision. This vision included treating all clients, children, and staff with respect, better utilization of community resources designed to help children and families, developing programs that would minimize failed placements, and focusing on permanent rather than temporary solutions. With the help of some reputable community leaders, the engines revved and Len and Peggy sped off on a course to develop their foster care and adoption agency. In 2001 Hope 4 Kids became a licensed adoption agency and in 2013 Hope 4 Kids obtained their international adoption license in the state of Washington.

Do you have any piece of advice for new businesses owners?

Welcome Express

Welcome Express was founded in 1986 and is celebrating 20 years as Orange County's premier newcomer welcome service. They seek to be a "home plate" for new residents who are ready to touch base with their current surroundings. Welcome Express greets new residents in several ways:
  1. By distributing civic information about their new community and gifts from various sponsor businesses in their area via a mailed welcome package.
  2. Orange County has one of the highest per-capita household computer ownership rates in the country. Welcome Express takes advantage of this fact by providing a comprehensive Online Resource Center offering newcomers additional information to facilitate their immersion into the Orange County lifestyle.
As a local business, they work closely with local civic and community organizations - in addition to the sponsors - so that their total offering adds value for both the new resident and the sponsor. As a result, the Welcome Express package is the largest, most comprehensive package of its type new residents will receive after their move.

By accelerating the link between new residents, local businesses, city resources, and city leadership, Welcome Express helps foster that all important "sense of community" we all strive for.

IlluminOCEAN: 40 Nights of Holiday Lights
The Majestic Sealife of Dana Point Shines Bright in a Dazzling Holiday Display
The holidays will shine bright this year as Dana Point IlluminOcean debuts 18 large scale lighting attractions for forty nights of holiday lights at the Dana Point Harbor! This wonderland by the sand - created and funded by The Resorts of Dana Point to become an annual winter tradition - features a brilliant spectacle of 18 oversized lighting sculptures with over 225,000 LED lights, and is free to the public for viewing nightly at sundown beginning November 26, 2014.

As the whale watching capital of the world, and proud stewards of the coastal ecosystems which drives most of the destination's tourism traffic, the sea-themed holiday lighting sculptures showcase the city's devotion to ocean preservation.

From octopus and sharks, to starfish and surfers, the dazzling displays are highlighted by a towering glow-motion tree, light tunnels stretching longer than a football field and over a dozen gigantic lighting sculptures - so big visitors can walk through and inside the belly of a glowing 40-foot Blue whale!

As visitors stroll through the colorful collection of immersive attractions, every step is filled with vibrant sights and sounds while roaming street performers entertain crowds, glow merchandise shines and "Whale Eyes" 3D glasses give a must-see holographic look at this holiday spectacle. See the lights. Explore the sights. This year and every year, only at Dana Point IlluminOcean. For additional information, visit IlluminOCEAN.com.
