A Note from our Founder

Nick Tesi Image

Nick Tesi

TNG Visual Effects Founder

April is certainly the month of showers, however it is more about business than rain. There is a shower of business that seems to keep coming.

This is great as it gives us the opportunity to invest in new technology, expand services, and build a more comprehensive service to provide to all our current and upcoming locations. It seems to me there is always something new you can use to add to what you offer or a software that helps you keep costs low and speed up.

We are looking at a log of projects gearing up and posting as future projects that may need our service in Films, TV, and Games.

We are always looking for new partners that are synergistic to our service to work with that would help our customers and theirs realize more savings by working with both of us.

I hope you enjoy this months Newsletter and wish you all a great month, quarter, and year.

Testimonials

Look Who's Talking About Us

"I've worked with Nick Tesi several times now and have had a wonderful experience every time. He has provided an excellent quality of customer service and attention to detail at a competitive price. The scans we received for our 3D models were incredibly clean and precise. Our artists were very pleased with the level of detail and quality in the files we received, and our clients were extremely thrilled with the final result. If I ever had scanning work it is no question who to call - Nick Tesi is the best."

Digital Double and Props

Digital Doubles with Props

Digital Doubles need to be accessorized from time to time with digital props. The digital props need to look as real as your character to keep the illusion. This of course all depends on how close to the camera the Digital Double and prop gets.

What is a digital prop? It is an item that is built separate from the character such as a hat, umbrella, gun, holster, or anything that is separate geometry from the digital double.

Props come in all sizes and shapes to support the storytelling process. Some props are extremely complex while others are simplistic. This is why your 3D Scanning company or modeling company would like to see a picture or sketch of the prop before bidding.

Buying props off the internet is always a mixed bag. Most are made to look like the item in general. Take care as to how it is constructed and textured. We have found some of them to be difficult and cumbersome to modify them to look real or like the prop is being used in the effect.

Your Digital Double and the prop is a whole picture. They must support each other in the illusion. New props or overall upgrades coming to models will be Cyber Cloth and Cyber Hair that follow all the laws of dynamics as you assign to them. Increased scanning capability is coming to us with new technologies. We are also looking for faster ways that help us deliver to you great quality in less time.

The future will demand all these changes along with better and faster delivery and communications services. We are all headed there sooner than we think.

Buildings and Set Scanning

Buildings and Sets

We are often asked if we can do Lidar scanning. This stands for large area or building scans or set scans for movie sets. We also include it with cars, trucks, ships, planes, fields and general outside areas.

Lets look at one type of project of scanning - an old time movie theater. We first start by asking for any photos of it to get a good idea of the needs and the scope of the project.

After completing the NDA's, bids, and contract, we move onto the project. The first thing we do is study the building to Plan how we will scan it. We then go out and scan the designated building. In the first image it is a raw file of the scan in fact a point cloud of the image. We take all of the images scanned and stitch them together to create the object.

Early stage of Large area Scans

In the second image you can see that we had surfaced the data. Basically it is connecting the dots and making triangulated poly's. This as you can see is not a finished model, but a place to start and set up the model for delivery. Most companies I have worked with will take the model from this point as it is an Obj file and ready for re-meshing and texturing as you can see in the next two examples.

2nd Stage of Large Area Scans

This shows a very easy, but basic set that may help for you evaluate your options for your next production when scanned building and other objects are needed. The same techniques would be use on a train, an airplane, or any other large structures. There may be some clean up and modeling on parts or areas that were obscured from the scanner. We will do this before delivery to give you a full scanned and surfaced model.

The Human Element

The Human Element is getting better all the Time

Humans are the most important objects that we scan. They are also one of the biggest challenges to get all the parts of them right to look human or real. It is a challenge and a process that we have build a pipeline around. As a mobile 3D Scanning company we bring our tools to sets or locations that are convenient for the production, commercial, or whatever the need is at the time.

We know there are some big and awesome systems in the market, however they do not travel well if they travel at all. The important part of our business is to service the companies that need on site  quality work. This means great calibrations when the system is unpacked on site, working under all kinds or different scenarios, and setting up professional photo shoots for textures.

Another idea is to be more local and available to many locations. We are opening and supporting six locations at this time. It is a challenge, but we would like to be that seamless vender that appears when you need them, and then gone when you don't need them. The local group gives you the advantage of scanning at the last minute, saving on all those flights, hotels, meals and so on. Of course if you are in a tax credit area, it is a double win.

The stages of a model
Process of Raw to finished

The biggest concern is the cost of the overall work. It is not only enough to have characters that looks great, animates well, and has all the right accessories. It is also a matter of cost. The way of the business is more content for less dollars. Everyone is being pinched for lower costs and faster deliveries. We hope to replicate the success of Domino's Pizza with fast delivery, but in the CG realm, specializing in 3D Scanning with delivery in days instead of weeks.
