Welcome to the Children's Corner!  We will be sending a monthly newsletter informing patrons of upcoming programs and activities for Children and their Families. 
Featured Event!! Latino Heritage Month Festival

Saturday, October 18 

 

A book reading and short films about Sonia Sostomayor, the first Latino Supreme Court Judge. Caribbean food will be served.

 

1:30 pm - 2:00 pm   Program for children  Reading of the English & Spanish book:  A Judge Grows in the Bronx/ La juez que crecio en el Bronx by Sonia Sotomayor 

 

2:00 pm - 3:00 pm    Program for all ages. Short films followed by a discussion led by Elizabeth Garcias-Gonzalez, Executive Director of Centro de la Comunidad.

 

Empanadas and flan will be served.

Wednesday, October 1 - World Vegetarian Day

3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Learn about a vegetarian diet and take home some vegetarian recipes to try later.

 

World Vegetarian Day encourages us all to eat our fruits and vegetables. A vegetarian is someone who eats no meat.

This day is used to promote awareness of the issues, and encourages others to become vegetarian. It is a good day to try a vegetarian diet. You might just be surprised how good it tastes!

Homework Helpers
Every Monday - Thursday
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

 

Students from Connecticut College will be here in the Children's Library to assist school aged children with homework in all areas of study. This program runs Monday - Thursday 4:00-6:00pm on a drop-in basis. There is no fee for this service and no need to make an appointment.

 

This program will be held in the Children's Room.

 

      

 

Every Thursday in October - Art Behind The Story
10:30 am - 11:30 am

 

Ms. Christa will read a story and kids and parents can create a related craft! Ages 3 and up with adult supervision required.

Friday, October 3 - World Smile Day
11:00 am - 5:00 pm  

 

Come to the library and show us your best smiley face. Then create a new one to take home with you. All materials will be provided.

 

World Smile Day is celebrated the first Friday in October.

Monday, October 5, 20, 27 - Music On The Move with Miss Molly

A musical celebration for little ones and their parents and caregivers! Come sing and play with Ms. Molly on Monday mornings at 10:30am. This session will run for four weeks beginning Monday, September 29, continuing October 6, 20, and 27. Note: The library is closed on Monday, October 13 in honor of Columbus Day, so no class will be held that day.

 

 

Monday, October 6 - Mad Hatter Day
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm  

 

Grab yourself a crazy hat and wear it to the library for a special prize! Mad Hatter Day is a great day to be silly and celebrate silliness!

 

The Mad Hatter is a fictional character depicted in  

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The Mad Hatter  

is always acting silly.

 

Did You Know? In the 8th Century, mercury was used  

in hat making in a process called "carroting". Mercury  

poisoning drove some hatters crazy (mad).

Every Tuesday in October - Storytime Friends
10:30 am - 11:30 am  

 

Bring a cuddly friend to introduce to the group and listen to new and exciting stories each week! Informal playtime with storytime friends following the readings. Registration is recommended but not required.

Thursday, October 9 - Fire Prevention Day
10:30 am - 11:30 pm  

 

Sparked by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Fire Prevention Day teaches us fire safety and things we can do to help prevent fires from occurring.

Check out a book on firetrucks, firefighters or a non-fiction book about fire-safety or famous fires in history.

Friday, October 10 - International Egg Day
11:00 am - 12:00 pm  

 

What's all the EGG-citement about? It's International Egg Day!

 

Learn about the health benefits of eggs, participate in an egg hunt at 11:00am around the Children's Room  

in the library, and check out some EGG-cellent stories!

 

This is no yolk! Eggs are everything they are cracked  

up to be. Eggs are high in nutrition, low in fat, and  

people all around the world consume eggs and egg products.

Thursday, October 16 - Dictionary Day
10:00 am - 5:00 pm  

 

Celebrate Dictionary Day by reading...what else? The DICTIONARY! Learn some new vocabulary words and share them with friends in a game of Mad Libs.

 

Dictionary Day is in honor of Noah Webster, considered the Father of the American Dictionary. Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758. The objective of the day is to emphasize the importance of dictionary skills, and seeks to improve vocabulary. Noah Webster began writing his dictionary at the age of 43. It took him 27 years to finish! In addition to traditional English vocabulary, it contained uniquely American words.

Friday, October 31 - Trick or Treat at the Library!
1:30 pm - 3:30 pm  

 

Happy Halloween! Wear your costume to the library and pick up a treat and maybe some halloween stories while you are here!
