NPower mobilizes the tech community and provides individuals, nonprofits and schools access and opportunity to build tech skills and achieve their potential.  | | Stephanie Cuskley |
What excites you most about your work? I really love coming into work each day with the goal of helping others do better in life and realize their potential. It's incredibly energizing. I worked for almost 25 years in banking and I love using all the skills developed during that time to improve the world and get corporates and tech professionals more engaged in giving back. I firmly believe we need to make that bridge, and that tech is a key skill in the future, hence our mission at NPower!
We work with a lot of smart people in the nonprofit community thru NPower's skilled tech volunteering effort, Community Corps, which is a skills-based volunteer program that connects technology professionals with high impact nonprofits and innovative education partners. Tech volunteers enable schools and nonprofits across the country to use technology more effectively and inspire the next generation to pursue careers in STEM.
The NPower Board is comprised of very thoughtful, accomplished and generous professionals largely from the corporate technology sector. It's pretty cool to hear what they focus on everyday and how we can do social good together via their large organizations. Finally, our staff is this really fun combination of highly dedicated, smart people from both the corporate and nonprofit sectors, a great group.
Who are your role models? I have a few, but here I'd single out Holly Ross, Charles Best and Dan Petrozzo. Holly used to head NTEN, a community of nonprofit tech professionals and now she's head of the Drupal Association. Holly is this great combination of smart, driven, flexible, creative, great collaborator with a great network, trustworthy, effective and efficient, and fun. That's a pretty powerful combination!
Charles Best is founder of Donor's Choose, a nonprofit matching donors to individual teachers and classrooms. It is a simple, powerful concept and super well executed by Charles and his team. NPower's Community Corps program actually began in a meeting with Charles and while we may never be quite as well-known as Donor's Choose, we refer to their effort and learn from it regularly.
Dan Petrozzo, chair of the NPower board. I mention him not because he is our board chair but because he is incredibly smart, direct, trustworthy and genuine. He will always tell you exactly like it is. When he says he'll do something he does it and does it as best he can. Finally, he is passionate about giving back. No doubt, Dan is on a lot of people's lists of great role models!
What advice would you give the NGCP community? As an Executive Director of a nonprofit, I need to spend more time listening and communicating with my staff and board. With all the meetings and conferences (and there are a lot in the nonprofit sector!) there never seems to be enough time, but when I do prioritize it there are always major benefits. Spending time getting the board engaged provides enormous leverage to the whole organization. There's nothing quite like it when you get it right. At the end of the day it's the staff that has the great ideas and gets things done. Everything works when we have top talent who know where we are going as an organization. Great people do great things!

CanTEEN Career Exploration
CanTEEN Career Exploration is a resource aimed at inspiring girls to envision themselves in STEM careers through gaming and online activities. Activities include CanTeen Interactive, Explore Your Future, Livin' It, and Tour Your Future.
 Moody's Mega Math (M3) Challenge
The M3 Challenge is an Internet-based, applied math competition for high school students. The contest is free and open to high school juniors and seniors in 45 US states and D.C. Working in teams of three to five, participants solve an open-ended, math-modeling problem. Scholarships are awarded to the top teams. The challenge weekend is February 28 - March 1, 2015.
NCWIT's Counselors for Computing (C4C)
Counselors for Computing (C4C) provides school counselors with up-to-date information and resources they can use to guide students toward education and careers in computing.
