As the days get shorter and the lights come down, the Museum shines the spotlight on 100 years of the Ojai Theater. Explore this illuminating original history exhibit and join us for Saturday Classic Movie Matinees in the Rotating Gallery.

This month's features include a TOWN TALK entitiled "What Happens in Russia Doesn't Stay in Russia," benefit performances of "She Loves Me" courtesy of Ojai Performing Arts Theater, and ongoing Saturday Children's Hour and Guided Historical Walking Tours of Ojai.

The Museum will be CLOSED on Thanksgiving Day.

The Ojai Theater: 100 Years of Movies, 1914-2014
October 21 - December 28, 2014
NOW OPEN!  The Ojai Theater turns 100 years old this year. The theater, which opened in 1914 as the Isis, is the oldest surviving movie theater in Ventura County and one of the oldest single-screen theaters in the country. Invited community curator, Elise DePuydt, traces the history of the theater including its owners, films made in Ojai, animal stars, and Ojai celebrities. TOWN TALK: "What Happens in Russia Doesn't Stay in Russia (Eyes Wide Shut: Theirs or Ours?)"

Join us as citizen diplomat Paula Spellman provides a more nuanced picture of today's Russia than can be found in many current media reports.

Ms. Spellman has been visiting the country regularly since the '70s and has closely observed its twists and turns from the Brezhnev era through the collapse of the Soviet Union to the advent of Vladimir Putin. She will share her knowledge of Russian culture and present various points of view on the current political situation through the lens of diverse resources from around the globe.

Saturday Afternoon Matinees
Every Saturday beginning October 24 through December 20
4:00 p.m.
In conjunction with "The Ojai Theater: 100 Years of Movies" exhibit, OVM presents Saturday  Afternoon "Classic Movie Matinees." In the decades before television, weekend matinees at the Ojai Theater were so popular that long lines of children formed down the street. Join us in the Rotating Gallery for a series of classic family films with popular movie stars of the past including Charlie Chaplin, Shirley Temple, Loretta Young, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, and Judy Garland. Some of the films have a special Ojai connection.

Films have been selected to be suitable for families but are not rated using the current rating system. Parents please use your own discretion. 
"She Loves Me" Benefit Performances
Friday, November 21, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. (Opening Night)
Sunday, November 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. (Closing Matinee)
Ojai Performing Arts Theater Foundation is hosting two performances of "She Loves Me" as a benefit for OVM. This 1963 musical was based on a Jimmy Stewart movie, served as the inspiration for the movie "You've Got Mail," and premiered on Broadway. Set in a 1937 parfumerie in Budapest, it's a story of mistaken identity with letters to the lovelorn.

Join OVM at Matilija Auditorium on either:
* Opening Night, Friday, November 21. VIP and General Admission tickets are available. VIP package includes reserved parking, seating in the front six rows, center section, and a VIP party with the cast at Suzanne's Cuisine after the performance.
* Closing Sunday Matinee, November 30. General Admission tickets available.

"The Little Green Shoe" Story Telling & Activity
Saturday, November 8, 2014
2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Join local illustrator Pamela Marin for "The Little Green Shoe" reading and art project. Told through the story of a pair of shoes that get separated, have adventures and reunite, "The Little Green Shoe" inspires and empowers children of all ages. Goodie bags provided for children. "Gracias, The Thanksgiving Turkey" and "A Gift of Gracias"

2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Join Ojai Children's Librarian, Julie Albright, for the story of a boy and Gracias, The Thanksgiving Turkey,who became his pet and a story of how orange trees saved a family farm in "A Gift of Gracias." Children of all ages are welcomed. Stories appeal to first, second and third graders. Children will make cloved oranges and receive a goodie bag.

 

Cost:  Free for children and adult OVM adult members; $5 for adult non-members. No RSVP is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the program.  
Ongoing Highlight
Guided Historical Walking Tour of Ojai
Every Saturday, 10:30 a.m.
Need an activity for your out-of-town guests? Stroll through the changing leaves of downtown Ojai and learn about what makes the town so special. Hear stories of Ojai's colorful past and its pioneer families and check out Ojai's architectural highlights with a local Docent historian who will share tales with visitors and locals alike.

Tours begin at the Museum on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m.

Cost:  $7 per adult or $15 per family. Price includes admission to the Museum.
