IT'S SCARY OUT THERE!

By FRANK SAYLES JR.

Tifton Grapevine

As you creep around the Tiftarea today, don't be surprised if you see a few ghosts, goblins and assorted strange-looking characters -- not only is tonight Halloween but it's also election season and you may just bump into a politician or two.

Bet You Didn't Know This About Halloween!
Bet You Didn't Know This About Halloween!

 Scary stuff.

Downtown Tifton businesses held their annual downtown trick-or-treating Thursday evening, but tonight is the official time for trick-or-treating in Tifton neighborhoods as it is All Hallow's Eve. We ask adults to be mindful of kids crossing streets and walking along roadsides after dark. Drivers need to be extra cautious, and parents need to be vigilant.

As always, keep a close eye on what treats are handed out -- especially if you're offered something from someone running for political office!

Speaking of scary sights, the Tift County High Blue Devils look downright menacing as they prepare to meet the Colquitt County Packers tonight in Brodie Field. The Blue Devils are ready to take it to the undefeated Packers, the state's No. 1 team. Since it's Halloween, perhaps Tift Coach John Reid has a few "tricks" up his sleeve to give the fans some "treats."

Expect a good game beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Brodie.

Have a happy and safe Halloween.

EARLY VOTING ENDS TODAY; ELECTION TUESDAY
EX-PREZ TELLS TIFTON ABOUT CARTER CENTER WORK

By BONNIE SAYLES

Tifton Grapevine

During a quick visit to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton on Tuesday, Oct. 28, former President Jimmy Carter discussed the Carter Center's work to make elections free and safe in efforts around the world.

He spoke of helping enable the "African spring or African Awakening," in Tunisia, where hundreds of people

CARTER AT ABAC

could vote freely without fear. He asked the audience when women obtained the right to vote. When someone called out 1919 or 1920, he said, not even close.

"African American women (in the United States) got the right to vote in the 1960s. We've worked to make the right to vote legal in Tunisia, Madagascar, Nicaragua," he said. "Every time Republicans come to power, they start trying to deprive people of the right to vote," Carter said in one of few political comments made during his address.

"Why must voters have a driver's license to vote? A voter ID is hard to get if you don't have a driver's license. The reason is to deprive people of the right to vote. Who doesn't have driver's licenses?" he asked. "The elderly, the young people, the African Americans and Hispanics."

Only 11 counties in Georgia have early voting on Sundays, he said. Sunday is the day African Americans go to church and could be bused to polling places.

"We should do everything you can to get to vote," he said. "I hope all of you who are registered go to vote, early voting or on election day." Today is the last day of early voting before Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 4Polls are open 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. at the Board of Elections, 222 Chestnut Ave. in Tifton.

"I can't tell you how to vote," Carter said to laughter. "I would like to."

Carter's grandson, state Sen. Jason Carter, is running for governor on the Democratic ticket. Also this week, GOP Gov. Nathan Deal campaigned in Tifton.

And today, Friday, Oct. 31Republican U.S. Senate candidate David Perdue and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee will be in Tifton at 10 a.m. campaigning at the Tiftarea Conference Center located on U.S. Highway 82 next to Applebee's restaurant.
